The NCAA is reconsidering its gambling penalties for those who don’t wager on their own teams, and it could mean reduced sanctions — or perhaps none at all — for some of the Iowa and Iowa State athletes involved in the state’s sports wagering investigation.

Rarely do freshmen make it through their first Division-I athletic season unscathed, negotiating that rookie year without any significant forks in the road.

In four NCAA qualifying seasons, Iowa State senior Marcus Coleman compiled a 75-38 record, earning his first top-eight finish last March in Detroit. Getting over that hurdle of becoming an All-American is certainly not easy and entering the 2022-23 campaign there was no indication of Coleman, a local product from Ames, challenging for national titles.

Losses in Carver-Hawkeye Arena occur frequently for opponents both local and national. For Iowa State, thoughts of ending a 17-match losing streak to Iowa was certainly part of the plan approaching the Dec. 4 much-hyped Cy-Hawk dual.

Iowa defeated Iowa State, 18-15, after each team won five matches. Bonus points were the difference for the Hawkeyes as they picked up major decisions from Spencer Lee, Cobe Siebrecht, and Nelson Brands. This dual also marked the season debut of Spencer Lee who kicked things off for Iowa at 125 pounds.

Many wrestling fans have made the pilgrimage to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Many will tell you a story of a particular match, a certain athlete, an earthquake-level explosion of 15,000 mat heads within collegiate wrestling’s best environment. Many of those memories include duals between Iowa and Iowa State.

To many recruits, maturity is perhaps the toughest opponent. Some figure things out quicker than others. More than a few never get it and go into the “whatever-happened-to-that-guy file?” If the first two weekends of Iowa State's 2022-23 campaign are any indication, a couple of rookie Cyclones fall into the figuring things out category.

If a movie was made about this year’s version of Iowa State wrestling, David Carr would certainly play the leading role. The supporting characters — those transfers from Buffalo and Campbell, the upperclassmen trying to take that next step, mixed with a highly-touted recruiting class — make for a fun first few months in Ames.
