2019-20 New Jersey High School Rankings

New Jersey High School Rankings: 106

By Brendan Scannell

This is always a fun weight. Unsurprisingly, it’s a weight dominated by freshmen — both in sheer numbers and success. This year, no state placers return, so we can expect some new names to move into these ranks as the season progresses.

The big news of the summer was the departure of last year’s state champion, Brett Ungar, who transferred to Notre Dame in PA. With Ungar gone, this weight is up for grabs. Many seem to think Tyler Vasquez of Delbarton could be Jersey’s next young star. He was the highest-ranked until Evan Mougalian took him out at Super 32 on his run to the quarters. Evan Tallmadge is #3 after winning a Fargo title this summer.

Utter and Diaz were bloodround finishers at states a year ago, so they come in at #4 and #5.

I certainly expect some changes in this back half once certifications are final and wrestlers are officially down to weight.

At #8, I threw in another freshman, Anthony Santaniello. He placed in Super 32 Middle School last year, which tells me he should be able to compete with his fellow underclassmen.
