Zahid Valencia's 3 Single Leg Finishes When You're Stuck | Technique Tuesday
Jun 23, 2026
In this week's Technique Tuesday, world champion and two-time NCAA champion Zahid Valencia breaks down what to do when you shoot a single, lock your hands, and end up stuck and extended underneath your opponent — built on one idea: instead of forcing the finish, get the weight off your neck first, then pick your way out.
The first fix is a detail: don't bury your head between your arms, or you'll carry his full weight on your neck — put your eyeballs on your bicep so your arms take the load instead. From there Zahid gives you three finishes. The shoulder lock and circle: switch to the hamstring, elevate, drive your shoulder into his hip, and lean (never pull) to straighten the leg out before circling behind. The butt-to-heel cutback: circle to the single-leg side, drop your butt to your heel to open just enough space, pop your head out, and swing his leg underneath. And the quick level change to a double — same circle, then a fast head-pop, because do it slow and your head never gets through. Getting stuck underneath isn't the end of the shot; it's where the finish starts.
