Nico Provo's Re-Attack Series | Technique Tuesday

Sep 15, 2026

In this week's Technique Tuesday, Stanford All-American Nico Provo — fresh off a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships at 125 — breaks down three re-attacks built on a single idea: your opponent's shot is what creates your attack, and the harder he commits, the longer it takes him to recover.

Off a single leg, Provo drops his arm to meet the shot, switches his feet into a scissor step and throws his chest over the knee his opponent is on — it should feel like teleporting to the leg. Against a righty high crotch he cross blocks with the same arm instead of down blocking same side, then uses that block as a spring, replacing his feet and dropping to the ankle the instant his opponent stands up, chest on the thigh and shoulder on the femur so there's no circling out. And against a misdirection — the move he hit in his third-place match at NCAAs — he brings both legs back to respect the shot, which is exactly what loads him up to explode onto the leg while his opponent is still committed to two attacks that didn't work. From there he picks the finish off the reaction: cut double, shelf the leg, or pull the straight leg and catch the far foot.
