2022 World Championship Rankings - Men's Freestyle

57 - Thomas Gilman

As the defending world champion, Thomas Gilman remains at the top of the world rankings and will be the favorite to win the 57kg at the 2022 World Championships in September. The biggest challengers to Thomas Gilman will come from Ravi Kumar (IND), Toshihiro Hasegawa, and whoever Iran sends to worlds.

Ravi Kumar won Olympic silver last year in Tokyo but was on the opposite side of the bracket from Gilman so the two never met at the Games. Kumar is an interesting matchup with Gilman considering they both are physical wrestlers who compete at a high pace.

Toshihiro Hasegawa won a bronze medal at last year’s world championships at 61kg but dropped to 57kg and made Japan’s world team at the Meiji Cup in June.

Iran has two serious contenders - Alireza Sarlak and Ahmad Javan. Sarlak was last year’s runner-up to Gilman at the world championships but recently lost to Javan at the Takhti Cup. Iran will send both contenders to Tunisia to help decide the spot. Regardless of who wins, expect an Iranian to challenge for a medal in Serbia.
