The 2026 PIAA Wrestling State Championships are finally here. As wrestling fans and the top talent in the state flock to Hershey, PA, all eyes are on one athlete.

The NAIA Championships kick off Thursday just outside Wichita, where Grand View is chasing its 14th title in 15 years and the first with Grant Henderson leading the Vikings.

Winning a PIAA State Wrestling Championship as a freshman is a rare feat. In fact, there have only been 59 freshmen win PIAA titles in the 88 years of the championships. However, there has been a recent surge in freshman champions. There are many factors at play, but the coaching available at the club level prior to high school has allowed more freshmen to be ready to compete at a high level than ever before. The 2010’s produced more than twice the amount of freshman champions from any previous decade in history. The 2020’s are continuing that pace with 16 freshmen earning titles in the first six championships of the new decade.

The high school season is coming to a close in Pennsylvania with the state’s crown jewel set — the PIAA state championships — to begin Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey. This tournament is always loaded with top-tier talent, highly anticipated matches and exciting team races, and this year will be no different.

American University will welcome 11 other programs to Northwest DC for the 122nd EIWA Wrestling Championships, the oldest collegiate wrestling tournament in the country!
