U23 World Championships Match Notes - Day 3
The U.S. women's freestyle team sent four to the semifinals of the U23 Worlds Championships. Follow along LIVE.
SEMIFINALS (55 kg): Mihaela Samoil (Moldova) over Alisha Howk (USA), 9-8
First period: Samoil scores four off a counter for a 4-0 lead early in the match and that lead holds at the break.
Second period: Howk finishes a sweep single halfway through the period then hits a high gut wrench but Samoil scores two on exposure for a 6-2 lead. There's a challenge by the American corner after the exchange. The challenge was won by the Americans and Samoil leads 6-4. Howk comes out hard and scores to step-outs but is still behind 6-6. Howk takes the lead 8-6 but Samoil appears to score late in the match with an exposure with a second to go, but there's a challenge by the American corner. The challenge is lost and Samoil wins 9-8. Howk will wrestle for bronze tomorrow.
SEMIFINALS (59 kg): Himeka Tokuhara (Japan) over Lexie Basham (USA), 9-0
First period: Tokuhara scores two off of a head pinch for a 2-0 lead 45 seconds into the match. Tokuhara scored two on a pancake for a 4-0 lead. Another pancake extends her lead to 6-0 with 21 seconds left in the period and takes that lead into the break.
Second period: Tokuhara scores two off of a front headlock to a go-behind for an 8-0 lead halfway through the period. Tokuhara scores one on a driving double out of bounds for a 9-0 win. Basham will wrestle for bronze tomorrow.
SEMIFINALS (68 kg): Nesrin Bas (Turkey) over Sienna Ramirez (USA), 9-4
First period: Ramirez scored a takedown off a flurry out of bounds for a 2-0. Bas hits a dump for two on an exposure for a 2-2 criteria lead halfway through the period. Bas is given a step-out after an officials' conference for a 3-2 lead into the break.
Second period: Ramirez scored off a counter and tip her over for exposure and a 4-3 lead with 2:21 to go. Bas hit a duck and eventually scores and takes a 5-4 lead with 52 seconds remaining. Ramirez attempted an inside trip and scrambled out of the position for a two-point takedown for a 7-4 with 20 seconds to go and scores a last-second takedown for a 9-4 win. Ramirez will wrestle for bronze tomorrow.
SEMIFINALS (76 kg): Dymond Guilford (USA) tech Inkara Zhanatayeva (Kazakhstan), 11-0
First period: Guilford counters a throw attempt for a takedown then hits a series of leg laces for a 10-0 tech in 55 seconds but there's a challenge by Kazakhstan. Challenge is lost, which makes the final score 11-0. Guilford will wrestle in the gold medal finals tomorrow.
