Kylie Welker is one of the great young superstars in the sport of wrestling. Still in high school, she has already made the Olympic Team Trials finals. On September 17th, she’ll put her #1 ranking on the line against another World medalist in #2 Lillian Freitas in what is sure to be one of the highlight matches of the evening.

You may remember Welker from last year’s Who’s Number One. Unfortunately, her opponent, Skylar Hattendorf, had to injury default early in the first period. Since then Welker has done nothing but compete, compete, and compete some more. After taking 2nd to Olympic bronze medalist Adeline Gray in the OTT finals, Welker made both the Junior and U23 World Teams at Women’s Nationals, and then dominated her way to Fargo and Junior World titles. At both Fargo and Junior Worlds, the Wisconsin native didn’t give up a single point.

Somehow that wasn’t enough for Welker. Now, less than one week after Senior World Team Trials and six weeks before U23 Worlds, she’s once again toeing the line. That type of attitude is more than admirable.

All that Kylie Welker hype shouldn’t let you dismiss the skill of Freitas. A native of California currently competing for Wyoming Seminary, Freitas is a Cadet World medalist herself. She took bronze this year at 73 kg.

Freitas has shown her ability to improve. In 2019 she went just 1-2 at the Cadet World Championships. Has she improved enough to shock the world with an upset of Kylie Welker? Find out September 17th on FloWrestling.
