Week 12 of NCAA wrestling didn't have the same level of chaos as some previous weeks this season, but the results we did see give us a bit more context as the heart of dual season wears on. Here are this week's top stories:

Iowa and Nebraska Trade Big Upsets

The biggest dual of the weekend happened on Saturday when #10 Nebraska traveled to #1 Iowa. The Hawkeyes won convincingly, but three upsets — two for Nebraska and one for Iowa — were the big story coming out of Iowa City.

At 141, #8 Chad Red's 6-2 win over #3 Max Murin was really only an upset in number as Red had a win over Murin last year when Red eliminated Murin at the NCAA Championships. Still, this win for Red jumbles the 141-pound rankings and will bring Nebraska's projected team total closer to trophy contention when Tuesday's rankings come out.

Iowa true freshman Abe Assad registered a big upset at 184. The 10th-ranked Assad took out the fifth-ranked wrestler in the country, Taylor Venz in his Carver-Hawkeye debut. Up until last week, Assad was in redshirt. Now, he's a clear All-American contender.

Nebraska's #14 Eric Schultz avenged two losses to Iowa's #3 Jacob Warner with a late takedown for the upset at 197. Like the Red result at 141, this will move Schultz up in the rankings and will boost Nebraska in the team standings.

Noah Adams Stays Unbeaten Against Geer and Woodley

West Virginia sophomore 197-pounder Noah Adams announced himself as an All-American contender at the Southern Scuffle when he took home the title with a fall over Nathan Traxler in the finals. He continued to look solid this weekend with two more big wins.

Adams and the Mountaineers traveled to Oklahoma for road duals against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. For Adams, that meant matches against #9 Dakota Geer and #13 Jake Woodley. Adams, ranked #5 himself, won both matches convincingly, pinning Geer and beating Woodley 6-1.

Noah Adams was ranked 19th in the preseason after finishing 1-2 at NCAAs a year ago, but he has done nothing but win this year. Adams' big wins and pinning potential make him fun to watch and a threat to finish high on the podium in Minneapolis.

Zahid 'Takes Break' from NCAA Competition, Wins Matteo Pellicone

Arizona State's Zahid Valencia has made it clear that he has both NCAA and Olympic aspirations this year. He took another step toward his Olympic goals this weekend by winning the Matteo Pellicone, a UWW ranking series tournament in Rome.

Zahid rolled over Italy's William Raffi in his opening match, setting up a semifinal with 2018 World silver medalist Fatih Erdin of Turkey. Zahid earned an impressive 10-0 technical superiority win in that one and advanced to the finals against domestic rival Alex Dieringer.

The championship match was filled with great action, but it was ultimately Zahid who came out on top 7-5. This win, combined with Zahid's impressive showing at senior nationals, suggests that he's not only the front-runner in the NCAA field at 184 but a legitimate option for the US at 86kg.

Trio of Upsets for Oklahoma State Against Pitt

Oklahoma State fans saw an encouraging performance for the Cowboys as three unranked wrestlers registered upset wins in their 30-10 win over Pitt.

Dusty Hone, who has been splitting time with #15 Kaden Gfeller, had a convincing 7-1 win over Pitt's #20 Cole Matthews. Hone, who already has wins this year over All-Americans Tariq Wilson and Kyle Shoop, added another ranked win to his ledger.

At 157, Wyatt Sheets took out Pitt's #25 Taleb Rahmani in a high-scoring 9-8 match. Sheets has demonstrated great potential throughout his career, but hasn't had as many ranked wins as Cowboy fans would like to have seen. This win over Rahmani suggests Sheets continues to move in the right direction.

The biggest upset of all came at 184 where Anthony Montalvo took out #7 Nino Bonaccorsi. Montalvo had a takedown and two near-fall in the first period and then held on for a 6-4 win. This is the biggest win in Montalvo's young career and a positive sign for the Cowboys.

Check out Montalvo's win over NCAA Qualifier Alan Clothier from the Southern Scuffle:

Andrew Berreyesa out of Olympic Redshirt for Cornell

Andrew Berreyesa has been in an Olympic redshirt this season along with his All-American teammates Vito Arujau, Max Dean, and two-time NCAA champion Yianni Diakomihalis. That changed this weekend when Berreyesa wrestled in a dual against Virginia Tech.

Berreyesa, who had been focused on his Greco Roman Olympic aspirations, earned an 8-4 decision over Virginia Tech's Cody Hughes in his first NCAA action of the season.

Some fans have speculated that Cornell might also bring Arujau, Dean, or Diakomihalis back into the lineup to make a push for an NCAA team trophy this year, but that seems unlikely at this time as the three of them are not currently on the Cornell roster and second-semester classes begin this week.
