Bones Jones vs Cormier: Who Wins the Wrestling Battle?
We all saw the Media Day brawl yesterday between Jon "Bones" Jones and Daniel Cormier. As expected, there was some post-brawl trash talking on Twitter.
The verdict's still out on who's going to win this highly anticipated UFC 178 title bout, and call me crazy, but I think the verdict's still out on who's going to win the wrestling match up here too (I'm guessing most of you will give the edge to Cormier).
I don't exactly have an apples-to-apples video comparison of each guy just wrestling. I have THIS: Jon Jones winning a New York State Title in HS, and THIS: Daniel Cormier losing to Cael Sanderson in the NCAA Finals.
You guys might think this is pretty neat: Jon Jones showing wrestling technique on Martin Flo down at Greg Jackson's gym & Daniel Cormier showing wrestling technique on Mark Bader in the Okie State room. Jones' style is more unorthodox; Cormier's is more sound. Both styles are effective in the UFC. Check each fighter's technique below.
I'd like to remind everyone that Jones has made a career out of outfighting and outwrestling much more seasoned and credentialed wrestlers: Vladimir Matyushenko, Ryan Bader, Chael Sonnen...and he was crushing 3x d3 National Champ Matt Hamill before getting DQ'ed for landing a nasty 12 to 6 bow directly onto Hamill's skull.
But DC is DC. He's not over the hill like Matyushenko and Sonnen. He's stronger, more skilled than Ryan Bader and the like. And if Rashad Evans could neutralize Bones Jones' takedown game, then so can Cormier. More: Cormier's a World Championship bronze medalist and one of the most technically sound big men in UFC history.
