Three Things To Know: 74 kg: Mitchell Mesenbrink vs David Carr At Final X

Final X hosted in Newark, New Jersey, is set to take place on Saturday, June 14. One of the more intriguing matchups will come in the men’s 74 kg weight class as Mitchell Mesenbrink and David Carr meet once again.

With contenders looking for their first opportunity to be on the U.S. Senior World Team and those hoping to cement their name in history, the stakes are high for everyone.

The event will exclusively feature men’s and women’s freestyle disciplines, with 10 weight-class matchups each. The competition ranges from high schoolers to Olympic medalists and will leave plenty of room for upsets and stunning moments.

Here are three things to know ahead of the Carr vs Mesenbrink best-of-three series:

Matchup History

Mesenbrink and Carr have met twice already, with Carr taking the first win at the 2024 NCAA finals at 165 pounds with a 9-8 decision. Mesenbrink leveled the playing field back in April in the U.S. Open finals with a 16-6 technical fall win.

NCAA Champions

Both Mesenbrink and Carr carry outstanding college accolades with them into Final X. Carr claimed two NCAA Championship titles, one in 2021 and another in 2024, for Iowa State and was a three-time NCAA finalist.

Mesenbrink more recently won his first NCAA Championship this year for Penn State after finishing as the NCAA runner-up to David Carr in 2024.

Internationally Impressive

This matchup between Mesenbrink and Carr pins two very similar athletes together, where the outcome is arguably a coin flip. Both wrestlers have similar international accolades and have medaled numerous times at age-level world championships.

Mesenbrink holds three age-group World medals: 2024 U23 World bronze, 2023 U20 World gold, and 2022 U20 World silver. He's also a two-time U20 Pan American Champion and made the Senior National Team after securing third place in the 2024 Olympic Team Trials.

Carr similarly holds status with a 2019 U20 World Champion title, a 2016 U17 World bronze medal, and made the 2022 U23 World Team. He earned a silver medal in February at the Zagreb Open Ranking Series event and also defeated 2024 Olympic silver medalist Daichi Takatani at FloWrestling Night In America.
