Domestic Men's Freestyle Rankings
Pound-For-Pound
I know a lot of people will not agree with this, but I have several instances in the pound-for-pound where a wrestler is higher than someone they are ranked behind in their weight class. This is because pound-for-pound is less reactionary and takes in to account more time and results than weight rankings.
I felt as though Chance Marsteller had to stay above Joey McKenna because he has had a better career over the past two years than McKenna. McKenna had to stay ahead of Yianni because he beat him head-to-head last year at the Farrell and had a better Olympic Trials and Yianni has not done enough yet at 70 kg to jump ahead. Yianni had to stay ahead of Mesenbrink because he has a World medal, better international wins, and much more senior-level data than Mesenbrink.
All that is to show that it didn't feel right to drop Marsteller lower than #6, but it didn't feel right to bring Carter Starocci all the way up to #5 because of one win. He comes up to #12 behind Trent Hidlay, whom he lost to at the Olympic Trials last year.
Similarly, Jesse Mendez is still ahead of Real Woods, who just beat him. That is because Mendez had a great Olympic Trials, defeating Diakomihalis and McKenna, and Woods just lost to Aden Valencia twice at the US Open. Mendez drops below Starocci. Obviously, if Woods defeats McKenna at Final X, this will likely change.
