Three Things To Know: Yianni Diakomihalis vs PJ Duke At Final X

The representatives for the U.S. Senior World Team will be determined next weekend at the Final X competition set in Newark, New Jersey.

Both men’s and women’s freestyle disciplines will be put on display across 10 different weight classes as two qualifying contenders vie for a spot on the international stage for Team USA.

Many of the matchups that fans will be able to stream feature the most prominent names in international wrestling going up against emerging stars, some even freshly out of high school.

For Penn State wrestling commit PJ Duke, he’ll have to overcome Senior World Team veteran Yianni Diakomihalis in the men’s 70 kg freestyle event to have a shot at making his first Senior World Team placement.

Here are three things to know about Diakomilhalis and Duke:

Diakomihalis’ Fourth Final X

Diakomihalis enters Final X with incredible experience on the senior level and will be wrestling at Final X for the fourth time. He most recently secured a spot on the Senior World Team in 2022 with a series victory over Evan Henderson, but unfortunately, fell short in 2019 and 2023 in his other two Final X performances.

However, all of Diakomihalis' previous Final X matchups were at the 65 kg weight class, and this year marks his first in the 70 kg weight class at Final X.

Duke On The Rise

Duke comes in as one of the most notable names in the high school wrestling scene. He qualified for Final X by paving his way through the Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament last in May where he took down NCAA champions Antrell Taylor and Ridge Lovett. In the final matchup, Duke defeated 2021 Junior World bronze medalist Bryce Andonian.

Final X will serve well on Duke's growing senior-level resume, which includes a bronze medal in the 2024 U20 World Championships and a gold medal in the Bill Farrell Memorial International at the Senior level. He has also won the U20 U.S. Open in 2024 and 2025.

New York Natives

Diakomihalis reins from Rochester, while Duke is from Slate Hill. Both were able to make names for themselves in New York, but Diakomihalis was the only one of the two to stay in state for college, attending Cornell University, where he became the fifth four-time NCAA D1 champion in history.

Duke recently graduated from Minisink Valley High School, where he became New York's 11th four-time state champion while accumulating a 152-1 career record. Duke will continue his wrestling career at Penn State this year as a true freshman.
