Austin Gomez Announces Commitment To Wrestle At Michigan
Austin Gomez has announced his commitment to wrestle at the University of Michigan.
Austin Gomez announced on his Instagram Wednesday evening, December 13, that he will finish his final year of eligibility wrestling for the University of Michigan. This announcement came just two days after Gomez was granted approval for another year of eligibility due to the NCAA approving his medical hardship waiver.
After Gomez entered the transfer portal, Michigan seemed like the natural fit considering Gomez was already training in Ann Arbor with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club while competing for Mexico internationally. Beyond that, Gomez will join four other graduate transfer All-Americans to bolster Michigan's lineup. Over the Summer, Michigan added past All-Americans Michael DeAugustino (125), Chris Cannon (133), Shane Griffith (174), and Lucas Davison (285) to their lineup.
Gomez will fit in perfectly for the Wolverines at 149 pounds and immediately enters the title contender conversation. Gomez placed 4th at the 2022 NCAA Tournament and defeated current #1 ranked Ridge Lovett twice that season. Currently, Michigan is ranked #12 in our team tournament rankings and sits 22 points out of trophy contention. Gomez's potential points, combined with the rest of Michigan's lineup, puts a top-three finish within striking distance.
