Austin Gomez's Medical Hardship Year & Final Year Of Eligibility Approved

On Monday, December 11 Austin Gomez posted a photo to his Instagram story sharing that he has been granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA. Gomez missed the entirety of the 2020 and 2021 seasons with an injury and was approved for a medical hardship waiver allowing him to compete this season.

Gomez began his college career as a 133-pounder for Iowa State and started the entirety of the 2018-2019 season for the Cyclones. That year, Gomez qualified for the NCAA tournament but finished just one match shy of All-American honors. After his injuries, Gomez transferred to Wisconsin where he moved up to 149 pounds and placed 4th at the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Gomez again qualified last year but finished two matches short of All-American honors in the round of 16.

Most recently, Gomez has been training in Ann Arbor, Michigan with the Cliff Keen Athletic Club while competing internationally for Mexico on the senior level at 65 kg. Gomez projects as a 149-pounder in college this year and will be a title threat in an already deep weight. While Michigan is certainly a front-runner to land Gomez, he hasn't yet announced his plans on where he will finish out his final year of college eligibility.
