Is Viktor Lebedev Out For Rio?

After Russian Nationals in May, questions began swirling around Viktor Lebedev's presence at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Speculation died down when the team was announced this month. But now that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has formally weighed in on the Russian doping scandal, he might not be able to represent his country at 57kg after all.

The following comes directly from this weekend's official IOC ruling regarding the fate of all Russian competitors and their eligibility for the Olympics:

The ROC is not allowed to enter any athlete for the Olympic Games
Rio 2016 who has ever been sanctioned for doping, even if he or she
has served the sanction.

Of the six members of Russia's men's freestyle team, this only applies to Lebedev. After winning Junior Worlds in 2006, he received a two-year suspension (later reduced) for the performance-enhancing drug Boldenone.

Based on various reports coming out of Russia, both Lebedev and Aleksandr Bogomoev are participating in the pre-Olympic training camp in Moscow. But newspapers from their respective regions are providing contrasting information, which leaves three possible options.

The Yakutian newspapers are indicating Lebedev is in the camp and that he should be able to wrestle in Rio. Other newspapers are stating Bogomoev is ready to drop weight and will be sent as the 57kg representative. A few sources are suggesting Russia will have its 57kg quota pulled altogether, so no one will be able to go.

The latest coming from the head of the Russian Olympic Committee indicates that the 57kg quota will definitely be pulled. Alexander Zhukov said to TV channel Russia 24, via R-Sport, that the entry roster has been reduced from 17 to 16, backing up his earlier statement that Lebedev would not be allowed to compete.

Besides Bogomoev, the other possible candidates are 2012 London champion Dzhamal Otarsultanov and 2016 European champion Gadzhimurad Rashidov. Despite declining the Olympic spot after reflecting upon the officiating at Russian Nationals, Lebedev was still selected by 10 out of 11 coaches to be the Russian representative at 57kg.

At this time, nothing is set in stone. We will continue to update as official word is provided by the Russian Olympic Committee, United World Wrestling and the IOC.
