Notes:

1. The Captain’s Cup & current college season played heavily into this round. As far as rankings go, the Captain’s Cup was a ranker’s dream. It gave us so many relevant results and shook up some weights. Where the head to head results were mixed and did not give us a clear order, we used common opponents, results against the field, and body of work to determine position.

2. 50 kg is a mess, which is another way of saying it’s deep—very deep. Hildebrandt is the clear #1 and #2 and #3 make sense with Conder and Anthony, respectively, but after that it gets tangled as the results between the next four women create a web of wins and losses. In the end, we went #4 Shilson, #5 Fearnside, #6 Lampe, and #7 Golston. It makes your head spin seeing that Golston had an 8-5 win over Shilson on the January 9th Burroughs-Taylor card, but then Shilson beat Fearnside at Captain’s Cup, Fearnside beat Lampe (her second straight win over her), and Lampe beat Golston twice in recent matches. #4 is an impressive spot for the younger Shilson, but deserving considering her big win over Fearnside, perhaps her biggest win yet at the Senior level. These women will sort this out for all of us at the Olympic Team Trials.

3. The future is now. Young rising stars are making moves. Besides Shilson reaching #4 at 50 kg, Macey Kilty hits #2 at 62 kg. Anyone who saw the Captain’s Cup knows why. A 31-0 run at the Cup for Kilty, including an opening match 10-0 tech fall over world bronze medalist Mallory Velte, were pretty convincing. Meanwhile, three college rivals have taken over the bottom half of 76 kg, with North Central’s Yelena Makoyed at #7, McKendree’s Joye Levendusky at #8, and Colorado Mesa’s Tristan Kelly at #9.

4. 57 kg has two previously unranked women, and two more that were unranked last round. Titan Mercury’s Brenda Reyna, currently on the roster at McKendree University, cracks the top 10 for the first time, climbing all the way to #6 after a stellar performance at the Captain’s Cup, where she went 3-0. Titan Mercury’s Gracie Figueroa hits #7 after some big wins at the Captain’s Cup, the high-flying, previously unranked Koral Sugiyama, now famous for hitting four arm spins against Lauren Louive, lands at #9. Meanwhile, King University star Allison Petix is back in at #10.

 5. 2020 Senior National Champion Katherine Shai reached the #2 spot, as she keeps winning big matches, and even challenged world champion Jacarra Winchester in a 6-2 loss at the Captain’s Cup.

6. Keep in mind, these are Olympic weights. That means the non-Olympic year 10 weight classes are converging together down to only 6 weight classes, creating competitive depth. There are many wrestlers who are in the top 10 at their weights in non-Olympic years, but did not make the top 10 in this ranking. Once the Olympics are over, our rankings will resume the normal 10 weight classes.
