2019-20 High School Rankings

106

106lbs has been the most difficult weight class to rank all year long and it’s held true to form through half of the state championships. At the top #1 Marc-Anthony McGowan (NJ) earned a National Prep title dominating the field in Bethlehem. That was one of the few things that aligned with past results and rankings for this edition.

Illinois state results in 3A were a perfect example of the weight class this year. Joey Fernau (IL) has wrestled a tough national schedule and taken his fair share of losses along the way. He went through a previously undefeated Will Baysinger (IL) and Fargo All-American Charlie Farmer (IL). All three ended up just outside the Top-20 this week. The entire top 30-40 wrestlers could beat each other on any given day, and a lot of them have done just that.

#9 Ty Watters (PA) is a new name in the Top-20. He defeated #10 Mac Church (PA) in their sectional qualifier. Watters has been 2nd and 3rd the past two years at the PJW state tournament with losses to Church and #8 Tyler Kasak (PA). Kasak re-entered the rankings, last appeared prior to Ironman, with a title performance at the District 11 Championships.

#19 Ryder Block (IA) settled the Iowa debate with a dual win over Nathan Jesuroga (IA), and a second win over Brandon O’Brien (IA) in the individual tournament. It will be interesting to watch and see if he can carry the momentum into the spring.

#20 Koy Buesgens (MN) was on his way out of the rankings after taking a few losses that were missed just prior to the 2/12 rankings. He earned his way right back in with a 10-3 win over #11 Jore Volk (MN) in their section.

California, Pennsylvania AAA, and New Jersey state tournaments will play a pivotal role in the national rankings as the folkstyle season comes to a close.
