125 - #12 Sam Latona, Virginia Tech vs Sam Book, UVA

1st Period: Single leg right away by Latona, trying to finish out the back door.  McCormick attacks the ankles.  Looking like a stalemate and there it is. Beautiful high c by Latona, but another great scramble by Book and another stalemate. Nice sweep double and Latona finishes quickly.  He lets up Book and immediately attacks again.  Single leg, but drape finish and there's another stalemate.  This time it's Book in deep and now they're both head to ankle.  Some great scrambles here but just 2-1 after 1.

2nd Period: Latona takes bottom.  Book immediately puts a boot in, Latona looking for a switch.  Not going to happen.  1:20 to go.  Latona gets away to make it 3-1.  Latona shoots again and finishes the single and now leads 5-1.  He has been ultra offensive so far.  Looking for a tight waist tilt but nothing yet for Latona. Latona nearly reversed but drops down to the leg and it's stalemated with 10 to go. Rideout for Latona. 5-1.

3rd Period: Book takes bottom. Latona with a breakdown.   Book's away but there's a quick high crotch and finish for Latona to make it 7-2.  Another escape for Book and Latona attacks, he times Book's dive roll perfectly and plants Book for TD plus 4 NF! 13-3 just like that.  RT is coming too. Crossface cradle for 4 and there's the tech!  10 points in the last minute for a tech.  This dude...

133 - #7 Korbin Myers, Virginia Tech vs #12 Louie Hayes, UVA

First Period: Hayes immediately gets to a front headlock but Myers clears out. Hand fighting in the center.  Collar tie for Myers now cleared by Hayes.  This feels so plodding compared to Latona's breakneck attack rate.  Righty single by Myers, starts on the mat then finishes on the feet with a big trip and comes up with a bottom leg turk.  Hayes somehow has been able to clear off the bottom leg though NF looked imminent.  Myers very frustrated bc Hayes is grabbing his hand underneath.  Stalemated. Rideout for Myers.  2-0 after 1.  Lots of RT for Myers.

2nd Period: Hayes takes bottom, Myers scoops near ankle.  Hayes struggling to build up.  Myers gets the wrist and a beautiful roll through tilt for 4 NF.  6-0 Myers.  Sit out by Hayes but they go OOB.  26 to go. Hayes up to his feet but Myers returns and there is the ride out.

3rd Period: Myers takes bottom. Up to his feet and cuts and now leads 7-0 with RT locked.  Quick shot and there's the finish to make it 9-0.  He timed the reach well.  Myers lets him up and it's 9-1.  1:05 to go.  Hand fighting in the middle.  Shot by Hayes but a beautiful reattack by Myers and he gets the finish.  Beautiful drag re-attack.  Rideout makes it 12-1 final.

141 - #25 Sam Hillegas, Virginia Tech vs #24 Brian Courtney, UVA

1st Period: Underway now between two PA hammers.  Courtney attacks, head between and gets stalemated in a really weird position.  Filthy shuck with the elbow by Hillegas.  He's up 2-0, now 2-1 after a Courtney escape.  Same single once again for Courtney, trying to finish between the legs but HIllegas gets the far ankle.  Courtney navigates the counter and finishes to take the 3-2 lead.  18 to go.  Breakdown for Courtney and big rideout makes it 3-2 after 1.

2nd period: Courtney chooses bottom. Leg in already for Hilegas.  Courtney trying to switch with the leg in.  Courtney gets away to make it 4-2 and a single leg by Hillegas has him in a predicament as Courtney looks to counter by sitting the corner.  Hillegas head on the mat holding on and loses the leg, two more for Courtney and now it's 6-2 and Courtney finishes this period on top as well.

3rd Period: Hillegas chooses bottom. Good forward pressure from Courtney.  Hillegas building up to his feet, gets hands and is away.  6-3 Courtney.  HIllegas will have to get busy. Hillegas in a single but struggling to finish, tries to double off but Courtney is so goofy to finish on and there's another counter 2 for Courtney.  8-3 Courtney as Hillegas gets hit for stalling. That's the final.

UVA: 3

149 - #16 Bryce Andonian, Virginia Tech vs Denton Spencer, UVA

1st Period: Lefty high c by Spencer and we're scrambling already but Andonian pressures in and gets the two. Double legs in for Andonian.  He's got Spencer's wrist on his back with both legs in, looking to take him over but Spencer fights out of it.  Spencer up to his feet but back down now and Andonian threatening a nearside cradle.  Spencer breaks out but is still flat on his belly and once again his wrist is on his back.  Brutal. Rideout for Andonian

2nd Period: Andonian takes bottom.  Andonian up and out.  He's attacking again but Spencer stops this time.  3-0 lead for Andonian and lots of riding time. Single by Andonian but he comes up with underhooks.  Spencer threatens a headlock and they break free.  Period ends 3-0.

3rd Period: Spencer takes bottom.  Nice chop right side by Andonian and Spencer once again finds himself flattened out.  Boots in for Andonian.  Looks miserable.  Deep Half but Spencer won't go over. Back to the hammerlock for Andonian but he can't convert with it as of yet.  Brutal crossface cradle by Andonian for NF!  8-0 final, that was vicious.

157 - Connor Brady, Virginia Tech vs #20 Justin McCoy, UVA

1st Period: UVA needs this one in a big way.  2 on 1 right away for McCoy. Brady clears out and tries to dig some hooks. High crotch attempt by Brady but it isn't there. Hand fighting in the middle of the mat.  Brady elbows off to clear out.  Snap by McCoy and he fires off a leg attack and there's the two for McCoy!  Brady gets out. 23 to go. 2-1 after 1.

2nd Period:  McCoy chooses bottom.  Brady drops down and loses the leg and there's a quick escape to make it 3-1 McCoy. Brady in deep on a single had McCoy bouncing on one foot but dropped down to the mat and McCoy was able to catch the ankle and get the stalemate.  Brady probably need that one.  Time runs out.

3rd Period: Brady takes bottom.  He's away and then attacks but once again McCoy out scrambles and gets another clutch stalemate.  Another scramble happen and there's 37 to go.   Short offense for McCoy, now Brady on a single  but can't finish and it's 3-2 for McCoy.

165 - #1 Mekhi Lewis, Virginia Tech vs, #12 Jake Keating, UVA

1st Period: Here we go!  Single by Mekhi, comes up around the body and gets a NASTY bodylock TD for two.  That was insane.  Keating escapes.  Reshot double by Mekhi and a quick finish to make it 4-1.  Slick roll through for 2 separate 2 counts to make it 6-1.  Couldn't quite hold him for 4. RT already over a minute.  50 to go.  Mekhi riding tough. Ride out.

2nd Period: Mekhi takes bottom, he's out in 20 seconds. 7-1 now with 1:33 to go. 1 minute to go now as Mekhi has slowed his pace. Underhooks for Keating but Mekhi clears.  Underhook attempt by Mekhi but nothing doing.  7-1 after 2.

3rd Period: Keating takes bottom. He's away and now it's 7-2.  RT likely coming for Mekhi.  We'll see if he pushes for the major.  Mekhi warned for stalling.  He shoots but can't finish.  8-2 final for Mekhi.

UVA: 6

174 - Dakota Howard, Virginia Tech vs Vic Marcelli, UVA

1st Period: Double to single by Howard, but no finish. Scoreless after 1 minute. Shot by Howard and Marcelli comes up upper body then drops on a beautiful knee pull single and finishes.  Out of bounds they go, Marcelli still on top with 90 to go.  Howard is away.  2-1 with 50 to go. Lots of movement and attacks from Howard, but no real threats at this point. Period ends 2-1 Marcelli.

2nd Period: Marcelli takes bottom. He's away.  Howard shoots again but a perfect drag go-behind attack for two makes it 5-1.  Escape for Howard and it's 5-2. High crotch for Howard he's in deep and NEARLY finishes but runs out of time.  They're reviewing, but no two given.  Period ends.

3rd Period: Howard gets away to start the 3rd and now it's 5-3. Shot by Howard earns him a stall point to make it 5-4.  Howard nearly around but Marcelli with a reverse lock to get the stalemate, but Howard is coming. Double by Howard but somehow Marcelli funk rolls out of it!  That was insane!  32 to go.  Same single for Howard, can't finish.  9 to go! Another shot by Howard but he can't finish.  6-4 win for Marcelli.  Fun match!

UVA: 9

184 - #2 Hunter Bolen, Virginia Tech vs #25 Michael Battista, UVA

1st Period: Hard hand fighting already.  Single by Bolen, finishes around the body for two and now the legs come in. Good pressure on top, wrist on the back for Bolen but he can't get the turn as they go OOB.  Bolen hanging in the seatbelt position.  1:36 to go and Bolen still on top.  Escape from Battista makes it 2-1.  Single by Bolen and another finish makes it 4-1.  Bolen working the wrist out to the side now.  Potentially dangerous called. Bolen gives pu another escape.  RT at 1:52.  Front headlock for Bolen with 20 to go. First period ends 4-2 Bolen.

2nd Period: Bolen takes bottom. Bolen struggled underneath against Campbell but he's away in about 30 seconds.  Battista hit for stalling.  The two exchange singles, but no finishes.  40 to go.  Same right side single for Bolen, and same result with the takedown.  7-2 now. Rideout for Bolen.

3rd Period: Battista takes bottom. Battista is away but as soon as I write that Bolen gets another 2 to make it 9-3.  90 to go. RT for likely for Bolen.  Bolen goes optional start and it's 9-4 after the Battista escape.  Single by Battista, looking to finish, he's close but Bolen looks like he's going to get this stalemated and he does.  9-4 with 10 to go.  That's how it'll end.  10-4 with RT.

VT: 19

UVA: 9

197 - Andy Smith, Virginia Tech vs #2 Jay Aiello, UVA

1st Period:  Lefty underhook for Aiello right away. Quite a few attacks, first a firemans, next a high crotch and Smith doing a decent job of stopping him and there's another stalemate. Some fun flurries in the first 90 seconds here.  Aiello dictating and firing off a lot of attacks.  Smith hit for stalling after yet another Aiello single.  He's in deep and finishes.  2-0 with 50 to go. Aiello looking claw ride but can't quite catch him.  Rideout makes it 2-0 after 1.

2nd Period: Aiello goes under.  He's away and now it's 3-0 43 RT for Aiello.  1:35 left. Another good shot by Aiello but Smith's hips gotta be super heavy.  Another shot, and another good sprawl from Aiello.  That has to be exhausting for Aiello as he's been underneath Smith a ton of times.  Another high crotch from Aiello but they go OOB.  Gotta figure the stall point is coming soon.  Period ends 3-0.

3rd Period: Smith goes neutral.  He hasn't fired off much yet, curious to see his approach.  Shot by Aiello and there's the stall point and two more makes it 6-0. Figure four leg ride by Aiello.  UVA has historically had a lot of success with this ride.  RT at 1:30 and climbing.  Escape for Smith and he gets a quick two to make it 6-3.  Aiello gets away and gets a counter 2 at the end to make it 10-3 final.

VT: 19

UVA: 12

285 - Hunter Catka, Virginia Tech vs #19 Quinn Miller, UVA

1st Period: Plot twist with Coach Robie using True Freshman Catka.  He's a stud.  Pretty innocuous hands to the face called 1 for Miller.  Coach Robie challenges.  Call confirmed.  I thought they were supposed to call that potentially dangerous the first time but what do I know? 1:40 to go and it's 1-0 Miller.  Single by Catka, can't finish. Shot by Catka, Miller (who might have the worst haircut in NCAA Wrestling, by design with his 1/4 mullet thing goin) looks for a go behind but it's not there.  30 left now. Low double by Catka.  Can't finish as time expires.

2nd Period: Catka takes bottom.   Trying to build up but can't.  Good ride here by MIller, but Catka doing a good job getting himself some restarts.  1:10 to go. Another restart and they go OOB again.  51 to go.  Miller really earning his riding time here. Catka was so close to getting away but seemed like he wanted the reversal and Miller covers again and now there's the rideout! Big ride for MIller.

3rd Period: Miller takes bottom. He gets the leg and there's the reversal.  3-0 Miller with RT nearly locked.  Miller is dialed in. 32 to go.  RT officially locked.  Catka looking very true freshman-y underneath. Rideout for Miller and it's over.  4-0 final for Miller!

FINAL SCORE:
