Jaydin Eierman got the people talking again when he posted this tweet:

It has people wondering, Did Eierman Just Hint That He's Coming Out Of Redshirt? So now I’m going to give you the reasons Iowa should pull Eierman’s redshirt and the reasons they shouldn’t.

*It should be noted that this is all speculation, and I’m not even sure if Eierman can wrestle for Iowa this semester. As of right now, he’s still not on the online roster.*

Why Iowa Should Pull The Shirt

Qualify Eierman for the Olympic Trials

As of right now, Eierman still isn’t qualified for the Olympic Trials. To qualify he could place in the top two at Last Chance Qualifier, where the field will most likely include:

  • Evan Henderson
  • Bryce Meredith
  • Anthony Ashnault
  • Josh Saunders
  • Dean Heil
  • Ben Whitford
  • Ethan Lizak
  • Joey Lazor
  • Sean Fausz
  • Johnni DiJulius
  • Nick Dardanes
  • Mario Mason
  • Rob Mathers
  • Matt Kolodzik
  • Earl Hall
  • Jayson Ness
  • Dom Demas
  • Colton McCrystal
  • Kanen Storr

Or he could win an NCAA title where Luke Pletcher and Nick Lee will be his biggest barrier.

Put your best team forward when you can

A line of thought that seems to be more and more popular in college wrestling is to put your best team forward when you can. Meaning, if a guy in a redshirt is probably going to get you more points at NCAAs, go ahead and run with him while you can. You never know when a guy is going to get hurt or other factors are going to come in that could affect him negatively.

Max Murin is only a sophomore

Meaning, the Hawkeyes aren’t going to be without a solid option next year and the year after at 141.

This could be Eierman’s best chance to win an NCAA title

With the absence of Yianni at 141 this year, this could be the year that gives Eierman the best chance to win. Now, Yianni could come back at 149 next year, and Pletcher is looking incredible this year, which brings me to the next list.

Why Iowa Shouldn’t Pull The Shirt

Eierman could have a better shot at winning in 2021

If Yianni does go 149 and with Pletcher, Moran, and McKee being seniors, Nick Lee and Dom Demas would be the top guys standing between Eierman and a title at 141 in 2021.

Max Murin is currently ranked #3

Max Murin is quietly having a good season. So far this season he’s 10-0 with a Midlands title as well. There’s still two months and a lot of wrestling before NCAAs, but right now Murin is a good option at 141 for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa will most likely be the favorite again next year

With Pat Lugo being the only senior in the current starting lineup, Iowa will most likely be the preseason favorite to win next year. So, to counterpoint #2 from above, Iowa might feel confident in their team this year and want to hold out. To get a better look at how Eierman impacts the 2021 team race, read this article.

Let Eierman focus on freestyle and get another year of training in Iowa City

Eierman is taking an Olympic redshirt season for a reason this year: he legitimately wants to make the Olympic Team. I’m not sure what is best for him, but it very well could be training freestyle with the HWC full time and not having to worry about folkstyle at all. Plus that gives him another year of training under Perry and the Brands to only make him even better.
