Ever since Eierman transferred in November, it has been speculated as to whether or not the Hawkeyes would pull Eierman out of his Olympic redshirt or save him until next season. Now, with Spencer Lee and Austin Desanto still both being juniors, Eierman could very well be talking about next season. Nomad wrote an entire article dedicated to how Eierman’s transfer would affect the 2021 team race. Eierman’s tweet has people talking once again, however.
Since transferring to Iowa, Eierman has only competed at the 2019 US Senior Nationals, where he went 2-2. If Eierman were to choose to compete for Iowa this season, he could be ranked as high as #2 with wins over #2 Mitch McKee and #3 Dom Demas at last year’s NCAAs.
Eierman did drop a match to #4 Nick Lee at Senior Nats. It is obvious, but should be pointed out, that match was indeed freestyle and could be completely different in folkstyle. In fact, Eierman beat Nick Lee 12-4 at 2018 NCAAs.
With Eierman not yet being qualified to Olympic Trials, a possible reason to pull his redshirt (in addition to trying to win a team title) is to qualify for the Olympic Trials. Qualifying tournaments are down to NCAAs and the Last Chance Qualifier. If Eierman wins NCAAs, he's qualified and doesn't have to wait to try and make top-two at Last Chance.
Will Brands pull another redshirt?
