Team USA picked up two medals today in Greco-Roman at the Junior world championships. Cohlton Schultz won a bronze medal at 130kg and Andrew Berreyesa made the finals at 82kg.

The Arizona State commit made the most of his second trip to Junior worlds, as he pinned his first two opponents to make the semifinals. Schultz ended up on top in a flurry against Lingzhe Meng (CHN) in the Round of 16; Meng earned a silver at the Hungarian Grand Prix, a senior level ranking series event. In the quarterfinals, the Colorado native stuck the European champ Oleg Agakhanov of Russia.

Still a first year Junior, Schultz scored a gut wrench, takedown, and Caution+2 in his bronze medal match against Ante Milkovic of Croatia. It is his second age level world medal in two years after winning the 100kg Cadet title last September.

About an hour or so before Schultz finished off his tournament with a medal, Cornell freshman Andrew Berreyesa won his semifinal. The former Fargo champ smartly navigated his way through the top half of the bracket, opening with a 4-1 win over Simone Fidelbo of Italy.

A shutout over 2015 Cadet Asian silver Abubakr Alimov (UZB) in the quarterfinals guaranteed that Berreyesa would wrestle for a medal. A first period takedown turned out to be the difference for the Nevada native in his semifinal, as he weathered being put down in par terre and giving up a stepout to emerge victorious on criteria over Muhutdin Saricicek (TUR).

Berreyesa will have a stout test in the finals tomorrow, taking on Aleksandr Komarov. The Russian is a four-time European age-level champion with three age level world titles. He has also won three senior level tournaments the past two years. Essentially, Komarov was the overwhelming favorite to win this bracket and is on paper the toughest possible finals opponent for Berreysea.

Kamal Bey came back this year looking for a second straight Junior world title. He made the 77kg semis, but lost that and his bronze medal match to finish fifth. Bey contributed 10 points to America's team score, putting the Stars and Stripes in eighth place as a team heading into the final day of Greco competition.
