A lot of very smart wrestling people were waiting for the breakout performance of Carson Kharchla.
Not your typical high school star that begins with junior high accolades, many recruiters saw something raw and blossoming in Kharchla's Ironman and State tournament work.
And there it was. In Fargo, perhaps the biggest of stages, Kharchla had the showing we thought he was capable of as he bested a field that featured half the Top 10 170lbers.
In a sea of breakout stars, Kharchla was arguably the hottest riser. And of course the next question became 'where is he going (to college)'?
Well, Carson took a well-deserved post-Fargo vacation and sorted it out. He has narrowed down his list to his five official visits and scheduled his trips out.
Carson Kharchla | Visit Date |
Virginia | Aug 31 |
Ohio State | Sept 7 |
NC State | Sept 14 |
Minnesota | Sept 21 |
Oklahoma St. | Oct 12 |
The list, as Carson points out, hasn't changed much from his initial interests. For those thinking his Fargo fame might have had him interested in new suitors that came knocking afterward - they'd be wrong.
"My Fargo performance really didn’t change my outlook on recruiting. I had been in contact with schools going into Fargo and I was happy with those schools. The schools that talked to me after Fargo really didn’t alter me from the schools that I was already looking at. In fact Fargo probably did the opposite for me as in it made me look at the schools on my initial list and really think if I wanted to look anywhere else; and I didn’t want to. I was happy with the schools I had chosen and now it was just time to find the right one."
Kharchla, whose father Miron is from the caucus mountain region of Russia, had an unusual wrestling upbringing wherein before high school he rarely competed. Instead, Miron and Carson focused on developing his skills and not competition or wins and losses. And it certainly seems to have worked.
His preferences in a college are similarly simple.
"I'm just looking for a place that I can excel on and off the mat and a place where everyone is on the same page and everyone wants to get better and push others to get better as well."
As far as his upcoming competition schedule, Carson will be taking on Blair Academy's Julian Ramirez for the #1 spot in the nation at Who's #1.
