“I just look for wisdom.”

Kevon Davenport has had the privilege of being around some of the best wrestlers and coaches in the world.

And just being able to gain an ounce of insight from each of them is all he’s ever looked for. And now that the same people he looked up to as a young wrestler, such as Jordan Burroughs or Kellen Russell, are hoping he decides to come to their alma mater, the objective hasn’t changed.

“Growing up in Michigan I watched Kellen Russell win NCAA titles and I watched Jordan Burroughs blast double everyone and win world titles and now that I have the chance to work with those guys it’s a little overwhelming, but I look for what I can learn from them,” Davenport said. “Being recruited by these big-time coaches is a bit stressful but no matter where I end up I feel that I can do great things and achieve my goals. I just have to figure out my perfect fit.”

The fifth-ranked three-time Michigan state champ is set to take his visits in the next few weeks with the thought of making his decision before he starts his senior season where winning his fourth state title is the only thing on his mind.

"No later than September 20th,” he said. “It can obviously be sooner, but that’s my cutoff date. I don’t want to rush things at all, but I also don’t want to have this decision hanging over me going into my last high school season."

Davenport’s top schools are (in order by date of visit):

School

Date of visit

Virginia

August 24

Nebraska

September 8

NC State

September 13

Michigan

TBD

While he has yet to take any official visits, he was able to get some experiences of what Nebraska and North Carolina State have to offer this summer at their annual camps. Along with getting to work with Burroughs, Green and some potential teammates at Nebraska and learning from Tommy Gantt, Nick Gwiazdowski, and returning NCCA runner-up Hayden Hidlay at NC State, he’s got some of his friends, who have already committed, pulling him in different directions as well.

“The coaches are tough to handle. When I make my decision and I tell three other coaches that I’m not picking their school, that will be tough,” he said. “My friends are a different story. Kurt [McHenry] talks to me about us being teammates all the time. It’ll be hard to tell him or my other friends if I don’t end up going to the same school as them, but not as hard as telling the coaches.”

Overall, Davenport, who projects as a 149, has a big decision to make. His list includes very notable programs that he would be able to succeed at academically, athletically and then onto the next level internationally.

“Setting myself up to accomplish my goals is the number one thing I’m looking for,” he said. “One thing that’s made things a little easier is how my parents have taught me to approach things openly and for me to remember that no matter what it’s my decision and no one else’s.”

Look for Davenport’s decision in the coming weeks and to see him in action make sure you tune in to watch Super 32 where he will be looking to claim one of the coveted title belts live on FloWrestling.
