Mikhail Mamiashvili, president of the Russian Wrestling Federation, is reportedly under investigation by United World Wrestling's ethics committee. Thursday evening, after the completion of the medal matches, media reports began circulating that Mamiashvili allegedly punched 63kg Russian Olympian Inna Trazhukova.
Alexander Zhukov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee, confirmed to Russian media agency R-sport that the ethics committee would look into the allegations. Mamiashvili is also a vice president of UWW, so it is not known at this time what effect, if any, the investigation could have on his standing within the sport's governing body.
Trazhukova is an accomplished wrestler on the Russian national team who has won two bronze medals at the European championships, as well as two world university silvers. In her first Olympic Games this year, she made the bronze-medal match, but ultimately lost 6-3 to Monika Michalik of Poland.
Since the incident occurred, Mamiashvili has publicly apologized to not just Trazhukova, but the entire women's team for his comments regarding their performance in Rio. Trazhukova said she will not accept his apology.
