With the entire World Team set, it seemed like a good time to put out an updated set of Pound for Pound rankings. Since it was prior to the World Team Trials when the last set came out, you can imagine there have been considerable changes. Comparing various bodies of work across different weights as well as the varied (and often limited) competition schedules present quite a challenge. Here's what I came up with! Feel free to comment, criticize, and provide your own top 20 as well!
1. Jordan Burroughs- Come at the king, you best not miss.
2. Tervel Dlagnev - The big fella is banged up, but until he someone else steps up and places at Worlds, this is his spot.
3. Brent Metcalf - Looked as good as ever at Pan Am's. Tough to envision him not wrestling for a medal in Vegas.
4. Kyle Snyder - We keep waiting for him to show his youth/inexperience and have a setback. We may be waiting awhile.
5. Jake Herbert - Loved his effort against Salas, closing the gap.
6. Kyle Dake - He answered tons of questions at the World Team Trials. Looked as good as ever.
7. David Taylor - Magic Man needs a growing/shrinking spell. So good, but this weight takes no prisoners.
8. Reece Humphrey - Great job domestically, hasn't had a strong international showing lately.
9. Andrew Howe - He's a finish away from beating DT at the Open and Dake at the trials. Think about it.
10. James Green - 2 wins over Schlatter, 2 wins over Marable and a win over #5 Chamizo says a lot about the level Green is wrestling at right now. Maybe he could go higher?
11. Ed Ruth - Herbert appears to have surpassed him, but he's still wrestled at a high level this year including a win over Salas.
12. Jake Varner - Has made the finals of the Open and Trials. He's just been surpassed by Snyder.
13. Tony Ramos - Tough guy to place. Undefeated domestically for 2 years now but is still without a signature international win. Won Paris GP, and had a nice World Cup Showing.
14. Jordan Oliver - Incredible consistency but needs some more international wins at 65 to make an additional jump.
15. Zach Rey - Places basically everywhere internationally. The clear cut #2 at 125. Done sleeping on Rey.
16. Keith Gavin - Keith keeps making National teams and competing at an extremely high level.
17. Jimmy Kennedy - Did look good at 65, but he's still not the same guy he was at 61.
18. Nick Marable - Despite losing to Green, he still won the U.S. Open and has been very consistent internationally.
19. Coleman Scott - Needs to avoid that one match every tournament. 3rd at the Open and WTT's falling to Naser at the Open and Dennis (who he teched at the Open) at the Trials.
20. Daniel Dennis - Yes he has the win over Coleman, but Coleman beat him as well and also has the Maple win. I think this is a fair launching point for Dennis.
