The 2026 Senior World Championships are almost here, and the brackets will give wrestling fans their first look at the matchups and potential paths to a world title in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The tournament runs Oct. 24-Nov. 1 and features men's freestyle, women's freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

With world champions returning and some weight classes guaranteed to crown new champions, the draws will help set the stage for nine days of international wrestling.

Here are five things to know about the 2026 Senior World Championships brackets.

1. The Brackets Will Be Released In Waves

Fans should not expect all 30 weight-class brackets to appear at once.

United World Wrestling will release the draws on a rolling schedule, with each discipline's brackets becoming available before its competition begins.

The Greco-Roman brackets are expected Friday, Oct. 23, followed by the women's freestyle brackets Monday, Oct. 26, and the men's freestyle brackets Wednesday, Oct. 28.

That schedule gives fans time to study each draw before the wrestlers take the mat. It also means the bracket conversation will continue to evolve throughout the nine-day tournament.

2. Greco-Roman Gets The First Look

Greco-Roman wrestling opens the Senior World Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Its 10 weight classes will kick off the tournament, with qualification rounds, semifinals, repechage and medal matches spread across the first four days.

The draws will reveal which wrestlers face the toughest challenges early and which potential matchups could develop later in the tournament.

3. The Draw Will Reveal Potential Marquee Matchups

Entry lists identify who is competing, but the brackets show how those wrestlers could meet on the road to a world title.

Once the draws are released, fans can identify possible quarterfinal and semifinal matchups, examine the paths of top contenders and see where returning champions land.

The placement of the top wrestlers will be particularly important when evaluating which sections of a bracket could produce the toughest routes to the podium.

Not every anticipated matchup will happen, of course. Wrestlers must advance through each round, and an unexpected result can change the entire outlook of a weight class.

Still, the brackets provide the first opportunity to map out the matchups fans will be watching most closely.

4. Every Weight Class Starts With A Clean Slate

Regardless of past results or international credentials, every wrestler must earn their place on the podium through the bracket.

The draw establishes the route each competitor must take, but previous world titles, Olympic medals and other accolades do not guarantee success on the mat.

For wrestlers making their senior world championship debut, the tournament offers an opportunity to establish themselves on the international stage. For experienced veterans, it is another chance to prove they belong among the world's best.

Once competition begins, each match matters, and one loss can dramatically change a wrestler's path to a medal.
