The heavyweight division is always capable of delivering dramatic finishes, and the 125 kg bracket at the 2026 Senior World Championships has no shortage of talent ready to make a run at gold.
The field features U.S. representative Wyatt Hendrickson, defending world champion Amir Hossein Zare of Iran, Azerbaijan's Giorgi Meshvildishvili, Bahrain's Shamil Sharipov and Poland's Robert Baran.

Here are three reasons why 125 kg is a must-watch weight class at Senior Worlds.
1. Wyatt Hendrickson Gets Another Chance To Shine On The World Stage
Hendrickson will have another opportunity to prove himself against the world's best heavyweights after a difficult debut at the 2025 Senior World Championships.
Hendrickson finished 17th in Zagreb, Croatia, last year after losing to Abdulla Kurbanov, 14-4, by technical superiority in the opening round. The result was a disappointing end to his first Senior World Championships.
Hendrickson earned another opportunity to represent the U.S. at the 2026 Senior World Championships by defeating Mason Parris at Final X in June. Parris is a 2024 Olympian and 2023 Senior World bronze medalist, making the series an important test for Hendrickson as he secured his spot on the U.S. team.
Now, Hendrickson has a chance to put last year's early exit behind him and make a stronger run in Astana. After earning his place through Final X, he will look to turn that success into a breakthrough performance on the world stage.
2. Amir Hossein Zare Is Back To Defend His World Title
Zare enters Astana as the reigning world champion after winning gold at the 2025 Senior World Championships. He defeated Meshvildishvili of Azerbaijan, 5-0, in the final to secure the title.
The Iranian heavyweight has established himself as the division's premier competitor, combining strength and scoring ability against the world's best. He also earned silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics, adding another major international result to his resume.
Zare will have a target on his back in Astana, but his recent success makes him a clear contender to reach the top of the podium again. With familiar opponents returning to the bracket, his title defense could feature some challenging matchups from the opening rounds onward.
3. The International Field Is Loaded With Medal Threats
Even beyond Hendrickson and Zare, the 125 kg bracket features several wrestlers capable of making a deep run.
Meshvildishvili reached the 2025 world final before falling to Zare. Sharipov also earned a medal at the 2025 Senior World Championships, taking bronze, while Baran claimed a bronze medal of his own. Their return gives the division a strong group of proven international contenders.
At heavyweight, one big sequence can change a match in a hurry. That makes the race to the podium especially compelling, with several proven contenders looking to challenge Zare and emerge as world champion.
With Hendrickson looking to make his mark, Zare defending his title and a deep international field ready to challenge both, 125 kg is a weight class wrestling fans should have circled for the 2026 Senior World Championships.
