Four Olympic champions. Multiple world champions. One weight class.

The 97 kg division at the 2026 Senior World Championships features one of the most accomplished fields in the tournament, with Kyle Snyder, Akhmed Tazhudinov, Abdulrashid Sadulaev and Hassan Yazdani all entered in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Snyder is the defending world champion, Tazhudinov won Olympic gold in Paris, Sadulaev is a two-time Olympic champion, and Yazdani brings an Olympic gold medal and three world titles to the bracket. Japan’s

Here are three reasons why 97 kg is a must-watch weight class.

1. Kyle Snyder Is Chasing Back-to-Back Senior World Titles

Kyle Snyder returns to the 97 kg division as the defending world champion, looking to add another title to one of the most accomplished resumes in American freestyle wrestling.

Snyder won Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio Games and has captured four Senior World titles. His most recent world championship came in 2025, when he defeated Bahrain's Akhmed Tazhudinov, 4-2, in the 97 kg final.

The victory added another chapter to Snyder's career, which has included world titles in 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2025. He also earned Olympic silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Snyder secured his spot on the 2026 U.S. World Team by defeating Stephen Buchanan at Final X. He will now face another challenging international field as he attempts to defend his title in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The competition includes several wrestlers who have beaten Snyder on the international stage, including Tazhudinov and Russia's Abdulrashid Sadulaev. Snyder's ability to navigate those potential matchups will be crucial to his title defense.

With four Senior World titles and an Olympic gold medal already, Snyder has another opportunity to strengthen his legacy.

2. Sadulaev, Tazhudinov and Yazdani Bring Olympic Gold to the Bracket

Snyder is not the only Olympic champion entered at 97 kg. Russia's Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Bahrain's Akhmed Tazhudinov and Iran's Hassan Yazdani give the division an extraordinary collection of international accomplishments.

Sadulaev is a two-time Olympic champion, winning gold at 86 kg in 2016 and 97 kg in 2021. He has also won six Senior World titles, establishing himself as one of the most decorated wrestlers of his generation. His long-running rivalry with Snyder remains one of freestyle wrestling's defining storylines, and a potential meeting in Astana would be one of the tournament's biggest matchups.

Tazhudinov broke through at the 2023 Senior World Championships, winning gold at 97 kg before capturing Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games. He defeated Snyder in the 2023 world championship semifinals and again in the Paris Olympic semifinals, demonstrating that he can beat the defending world champion on the sport's biggest stages.

Yazdani adds another compelling storyline as he enters the 97 kg division. The Iranian won Olympic gold at 74 kg at the 2016 Rio Games and has captured three Senior World titles. Much of his senior career has taken place at 86 kg, making his appearance at 97 kg one of the most intriguing developments in the field.

All three wrestlers have the experience and championship credentials to challenge Snyder for gold. With Olympic champions and multiple-time world champions sharing the bracket, the 97 kg competition could feature several matchups worthy of a world championship final.

3. Arash Yoshida and an International Field Could Disrupt the Favorites

While Snyder, Sadulaev, Tazhudinov and Yazdani headline the division, Japan's Arash Yoshida and a deep international field could complicate the race for gold.

Yoshida earned bronze at the 2025 Senior World Championships, establishing himself among the leading contenders at 97 kg. He also defeated Snyder at the 2026 Zagreb Open, proving he can challenge one of the division's most accomplished wrestlers.

Yoshida's experience against elite opposition will be valuable in Astana. A deep run would require navigating a bracket filled with Olympic champions and world medalists, but his recent results make him a wrestler worth watching.

Georgia's Givi Matcharashvili is another contender with major international experience. He won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics and bronze at the 2022 Senior World Championships. Azerbaijan's Magomedkhan Magomedov also brings Olympic and world championship credentials, having earned bronze at the Paris Games and medals at the Senior World Championships.

Kazakhstan's Rizabek Aitmukhan adds another name to the field. He won the 2023 Senior World Championships at 92 kg and has also captured world titles at the U20 and U23 levels.

With Yoshida, Matcharashvili, Magomedov and Aitmukhan among the challengers, the division has plenty of depth beyond its four Olympic champions.

Snyder will try to defend his title, Sadulaev will pursue another world championship, Tazhudinov will look to return to the top of the podium, and Yazdani will test himself at a new weight. Yoshida and the rest of the field will have an opportunity to disrupt those plans, making 97 kg one of the most compelling divisions at the 2026 Senior World Championships.
