- 2026 Senior World Championship Brackets: Here's When They'll Be Released
With three accomplished international wrestlers leading a competitive field, 70 kg has plenty of compelling storylines heading into the competition.
Here are three reasons why to keep an eye on 70 kg at the 2026 Senior World Championships.
1. Zain Retherford Is Chasing a Second Senior World Title
Zain Retherford has already established himself as one of the world's top wrestlers at 70 kg. The American won gold at the 2023 Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, after earning silver at the 2022 World Championships. He is now looking to return to the top of the podium and become a two-time Senior World champion.
Retherford's 2023 title run was particularly impressive. He won four consecutive matches to claim gold, defeating Iran's Amirmohammad Yazdani, 8-5, in the final. A year earlier, Retherford had reached the championship bout before losing to Japan's Taishi Narikuni, settling for silver in his first Senior World medal performance.
Retherford also competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics at 65 kg, finishing 13th after being forced to withdraw because of a concussion. His return to the world stage followed a comeback that included winning the 2026 U.S. World Team spot at 70 kg by defeating Ridge Lovett in two matches at Final X.
With two Senior World medals already at 70 kg and a successful return to the U.S. world team, Retherford has another opportunity to add to his international resume. Winning gold in Astana would give him a second Senior World title and reinforce his place among the top American freestyle wrestlers of his generation.
2. Tulga and Akmataliev Have Multiple Senior World Medals
Mongolia's Tulga Tumur Ochir and Kyrgyzstan's Ernazar Akmataliev are two of the most accomplished wrestlers in the 70 kg field.
Ochir earned silver at the 2025 Senior World Championships at 70 kg after winning bronze at 65 kg in 2021. He is also a two-time Olympian, having competed at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Games. Ochir finished fifth at the Paris Olympics, narrowly missing the podium in the bronze medal match, after placing ninth in Tokyo.
Akmataliev brings an equally impressive international resume. He won silver at the 2021 World Championships before earning bronze in both 2022 and 2025. He also captured gold at the 2021 U23 World Championships at 70 kg, taking the title just a month after earning silver at the senior level.
Like Ochir, Akmataliev has Olympic experience, representing Kyrgyzstan at both the Tokyo and Paris Games.
The combination of Ochir's returning world silver medal and Akmataliev's three Senior World medals gives the division two proven contenders who know what it takes to reach the podium.
3. The Field Includes a Former World Champion at 65 kg and Other International Contenders
Beyond Retherford, Tulga and Akmataliev, the 70 kg division features several accomplished international wrestlers who could challenge for a medal in Astana.
Hungary's Iszmail Muszukajev is one of the most notable names in the field. He won gold at 65 kg at the 2023 Senior World Championships, establishing himself as a world champion before moving up to compete at 70 kg. Muszukajev's experience at the highest level makes him another wrestler to watch as he takes on a new challenge.
Georgia's Akaki Kemertelidze is another international contender in the division. Armenia's Arman Andreasyan also brings experience against elite opposition, having faced Retherford at both the 2022 and 2023 World Championships.
With a returning world champion in Retherford, multiple Senior World medalists in Ochir and Akmataliev, and an international field that includes former world champion Muszukajev, 70 kg has several compelling storylines heading into the 2026 Senior World Championships.
