The capital city of the state of New York is about to serve an important second role as the center of the state’s high school wrestling world.

The best high school wrestlers in the Empire State are headed back to MVP Arena in Albany, New York, and the mightiest will return home as the newest state champions.

The 2026 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Individual Championships will take place Feb. 26-28, and all of the action will unfold live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app.

MVP Arena, which has hosted the individual championships since 2022, is considered one of the premier sports and entertainment facilities in Upstate New York, and there’s seating space for 6,000-17,500 guests, depending on the configuration for each show or event.

The opening day of competition, Feb. 26, will belong entirely to the hopeful female wrestlers battling through the second edition of the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Individual Championships.

They’ve already fought their way through the regular season and sectional competition. Now, it’s time to try to add their names to the record book of one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the country.

On Feb. 27-28, the spotlight will shine on the boys, who will compete across 13 weight classes and two divisions – Division 1, Division 2 – after having placed in their sectional events.

From each division, the top two sections, based on a Power Points calculation, qualified three wrestlers per weight class for the 2026 NYSPHSAA Boys Individual Wrestling State Championships. The next five sections qualified two, and the remaining five (Division 1)/six (Division 2) each qualified one.

This process allows for the maximum number of participants who would be able to compete on the 8-10 mats and still have the tournament finish in two days.

The eighth edition of the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Dual Meet Championships saw two dozen of the state’s top high school wrestling teams head north for an intense day of competition Jan. 31.

The event returned to the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York, where it has been held each year since the inaugural edition in 2018.

Did You Know: High School Wrestling In New York State Began In 1963

While the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Dual Meet Championships is only a few years old, being held for the first time in 2018, the NYSPHSAA Boys Wrestling Individual Championships has been taking place since 1963.

The format of the latter event has changed over the years, and since 2004, it has awarded 26 state championships – 13 in each division.

Almost all of the most dominant high school wrestlers in the state’s history have come since the turn of the century. Four wrestlers have won five state championships. Another 11 have won four times. The oldest wrestler on the lists wrestled from 1997-2000.

Of the seven times the dual meet has been held (the 2021 edition was canceled due to COVID-19), Minisink Valley leads with three Division 1 titles (2020, 2022, 2025), and Tioga tops the Division 2 list with three of its own (2022, 2023, 2024).
