NCAA D1 Wrestling Week 15 Roundup: Carver Combat

Now that the National Football League has released the sports world from its vice like grip, the nation turns its full attention to the world's oldest and most excellent sport: wrestling.

Box Scores | Rankings | Last Week's Roundup

And for those whose attention has been turnt, the real super bowl is the many dual meets that occurred during the 15th week of the 2024-25 NCAA D1 wrestling season.

And as football's latest season comes to an end, and as I type up this week's collection of noteworthy happenings in college wrestling , I think of the real heroes of this super Sunday: you, the readers, for giving me, your humble blogger, something to do to distract me from watching a hated NFC East rival win a Super Bowl title in dominant fashion. Thank you for that.

The Dual of the Century of the Week

Hawkeyes Survive Hellacious Huskers, 19-16

Nebraska came into a rowdy Carver-Hawkeye Arena and nearly pulled off what would've been the upset of the year. But Iowa persevered and the Huskers were denied.

Below is the box score.

125: #6 Caleb Smith (NEB) over #23 Joey Cruz (IOWA) (Dec 2-1)

133: #2 Drake Ayala (IOWA) over #16 Jacob Van Dee (NEB) (Dec 4-2)

141: #4 Brock Hardy (NEB) over Cullan Schriever (IOWA) (MD 14-3)

149: #4 Kyle Parco (IOWA) over #2 Ridge Lovett (NEB) (Dec 3-2)

157: #4 Antrell Taylor (NEB) over Miguel Estrada (IOWA) (Dec 4-2)

165: #2 Mike Caliendo (IOWA) over #13 Christopher Minto (NEB) (Dec 5-1)

174: #14 Lenny Pinto (NEB) over #6 Patrick Kennedy (IOWA) (Dec 18-11)

184: #7 Silas Allred (NEB) over #5 Gabe Arnold (IOWA) (SV-1 4-1)

197: #1 Stephen Buchanan (IOWA) over #22 Camden McDanel (NEB) (Fall)

285: #11 Ben Kueter (IOWA) over #21 Harley Andrews (NEB) (MD 8-0)

  • Nebraska hasn't won a dual at Iowa before World War II.
  • The Huskers led until the final bout of the evening, and were up 16-9 going into the last two bouts.
  • Needing bonus points to avoid disaster, Stephen Buchanan and Ben Kueter delivered, with a pin and a major, the the majority of the fans in a packed Carver went home happy.
  • Nebraska got heroic performances Lenny Pinto and Silas Allred, who both got upset wins to put the Huskers on the cusp of victory.
  • Things were looking more auspicious for the Hawks after 149 when Kyle Parco defeated Ridge Lovett to make a mess of the 149-pound rankings.

Iowa also got a pretty big commitment from a big pretty good high school wrestler last Tuesday.

Other Worth Contenders For DotCotW

Penn State Massacres Michigan, 39-0

The only knock on Nittany Lion duals is their distinct lack of drama. It's hard for shutouts to contend with come-from-behind victories in the entertainment department.

Of course, the Nittany Lion faithful may feel differently. Plus, the Penn State community should be commended for filling the Bryce Jordan Center with fans and putting on a show. Around 16,000 of them watched the Lions mow down the Wolverines one after another last Friday.

The highlight of the dual was when redshirt freshman Josh Barr beat #2 Jacob Cardenas in the very last seconds of the second tiebreaker period in overtime. Check it out for yourself in the tweet below!

You can read more about this dual in our recap and match notes, free of charge.

PSU had a slightly tougher time with Maryland, "only" winning 35-10. Braxton Brown majored Kysion Garcia, who subbed in for Braeden Davis twice this weekend.

Tyler Kasak also unfortunately suffered a head injury when he collided with Ethen Miller at 157. The collision appeared entirely incidental, but regrettably, some fans in Rec Hall felt otherwise and booed Miller, who responded by pumping his arms, not in a celebration of an injury default win but in a response to the unwarranted boos.

Hopefully, Kasak can return to the mat and compete in the postseason. Penn State is still the prohibitive favorite to win an NCAA title -- and the Big Ten title and the rest of their duals -- but injuries are absolutely something you hate to see regardless of the circumstances.

You can read match notes of the Maryland dual here, also free of charge.

App State Fends Off Fiesty Mocs 24-17

The Mountaineers should also get credit for putting on a show for their loyal fans in Boone, North Carolina. Their dual against SoCon rivals Chattanooga proceeded along a similar route as Iowa's win over Nebraska.

App State was trailing 17-14 going into the final two bouts before Carson Floyd and Stephen Monchery came through with a pin and a major at 197 and 285 respectively, sending Varsity Gym into a frenzy.

#28 Lucas Uliano also came up big for the hometown team with a 15-1 destruction of #24 Sergio Desiante. Chattanooga got a clutch pinfall from Eli Knight at 141 and a big tech-fall from Kamdyn Munro at 184.

Other Things Happened

In the Big Ten

  • Minnesota pulled off an upset over Ohio State at home in the Covelli Center.
    • True freshman Ben Davino got the start at 133 but will still be able to retain his redshirt. He beat #12 Tyler Wells in tiebreakers in another display of his sky-high potential.
    • The Buckeyes also got a big wins from #18 Brendan McCrone over #9 Cooper Flynn in a 9-0 major.
    • Ohio State did not have their regular starters at 157 and 165, however, and the Gophers took advantage with two bonus-point wins.
    • Minny sealed the deal when redshirt freshman hoss #4 Max McEnelly majored #17 Ryder Rogotzke at 184 in the final match of the day.
  • Minnesota also dispatched Purdue at home 35-6.
    • Jon Jones was in the house to witness!
  • Ohio State got their groove back against the Hoosiers when they beat Indiana 27-13 on Sunday.
    • Indiana picked up impressive wins at 125 when #18 Jaccon Moran beat the previously feted #16 Brendan McCrone 3-2 and then at 133 when #31 Angelo Rini upset #10 Nic Bouzakis.
    • #17 Ryder Rogotzke put the dual out of reach when he pinned Donnell Washington in a little less than a minute. Nick Feldman picked up another ranked win at the end of the dual when he beat #19 Jacob Bullock 4-2.
  • Wisconsin picked up its first conference victory on the season when the Badgers defeated Michigan State 25-12.
    • The Badgers got a key win at 197 when unranked Wyatt Ingham beat #24 Remy Cotton.
  • Rutgers defeated their East Coast rivals Maryland 21-20.
    • Maryland's #11 Braxton Brown notched a solid 6-3 win over 2024 Big Ten champ #9 Dylan Shawver.
    • The Scarlet Knights' John Poznanski came through at 197 with a tech-fall win to put the dual out of reach for the Terps.

In the Big 12

  • West Virginia defeated Utah Valley 26-12, but the big news from the dual was #4 Terrell Barraclough beating #3 Peyton Hall with a takedown in the final seconds.
  • West Virginia had a tougher time in Wyoming, where the Cowboys got the upset win 19-18. Gentle ribbing from a clever Wyoming social media manager ensued.
    • The heroes for the Cowboys were Cole Brooks, who pinned Jordan Titus at 141 and #32 Eddie Neitenbach's upset win over #19 Dennis Robin, 12-7.
  • Little Rock hosted their next-state neighbors from Stillwater and they too should be commended for putting on a tremendous show for the Trojan faithful.
    • Big Little Rock wins came from Nasir Bailey, who got a major at 133, #20 Jordan Williams, who upset former teammate #12 Carter Young in tiebreakers at 149, and #22 Matty Bianchi's pin of #12 Caleb Fish.
    • Oklahoma State regained the momentum at 165 and won the last five matches of the day. The best performance for the Cowboys was #7 Luke Surber's 5-4 minor upset win over #5 Stephen Little.
    • Little Rock set an attendance, the first of hopefully many to come, and we celebrate attendance records around these parts.
  • Oklahoma State also got a pretty big commitment from a pretty good high school wrestler on Thursday.
  • The Cyclones stymied the Sun Devils 26-15. Iowa State then went 2-2 on the weekend with a 23-14 victory over Pittsburgh.
    • #31 MJ Gaitan upset #17 Luca Augustine in the biggest match of the ISU vs Pitt tilt.
  • South Dakota State stomped Northern Colorado 30-10.
    • The Bears' #2 Andrew Alirez majored #22 Julian Tagg but #18 Cobe Siebrecht returned the favor when he beat UNC's #15 Vinny Zerban at 157.

In the MAC

  • Edinboro outlasted this season's sentimental favorite Cleveland Slate 25-17. #31 Daniel Bucknavich got another win for the Vikings, but the Scots got pins from Brody Evans and Jared McGill in the final two weights of the dual to secure victory for Edinboro.
  • Lock Haven beat Rider 24-13. Six of the eight ranked wrestlers won, including #18 Isaac Dean of Rider over #31 Colin Fegley of Lock Haven in the only ranked matchup of the meet.
  • The Ohio Bobcats beat their instate MAC rivals, Kent State, 29-11.
  • George Mason won a thriller over the Ivy League's Brown University. Malachi DuVall secured a key upset win at 184 for the Patriots when he beat #27 Andrew Reall, 7-3.

In the ACC

  • North Carolina won one of the most exciting duals of the weekend when the Tar Heels defeated Pittsburgh 17-16 thanks to tiebreaking criteria (most match points).
    • The Tar Heels won the first four bouts before the Panthers roared back to life and won the next five to take the lead.
    • They were no upsets in the dual except for the final bout at heavyweight, where unranked Nolan Neves gave the Tar Heels the lead again, this time for good, when he upset #13 Dayton Pitzer 14-9.
    • The number of individual points scored was 40-38 in favor of Pitt going into heavy. Neves needed to win by 3. He won by 5.
    • This probably should have been included in contenders for DotCotW segment but it's already here in this section and it's very late and this blog has a very tight turnaround so I'm not going to change it, but it was a very good dual.
  •  UVA blanked Duke 39-0. The dual featured a ranked matchup at 165 where #20 Nick Hamilton defeated #27 Aidan Wallace 8-3.
  • The Hokies took it to the Cardinal, 30-13. Stanford got a signature win out of Nick Stemmet who beat #9 Andy Smith at 197, but Virginia Tech overwhelmed them with superior firepower. They also got a big-time win from #13 Connor McGonagle over #6 Tyler Knox in sudden victory.

In the Ivy League

  • Cornell continued their dominance of the Ancient Eight, or at least the other five schools that have wrestling programs.
    • The Big Red Beat Princeton 32-8 and Penn 26-10. Cornell's #13 Simon Ruiz's victory over #11 Nick Incontrera of UPenn was the highlight of the weekend for Cornell.

In the SoCon

  • Bellarmine improved to 4-3 on the season when they defeated the Citadel in a tight 23-17 dual meet on Friday and then routed Davidson 42-3 on Sunday.

In the EIWA

    • Unranked Legend Lamer of CP beat #25 CJ Hamblin of OSU at 157.
    • Unranked Beaver Kekana Fouret beat #22 Luka Wick.

Heavy Metal Matness

Still doing the bit. See previous Roundups for the origin story.

Today I will compare Michigan to Faith No More.

Faith No More is my favorite band. I would go as far as to say they are the greatest band ever. I would also contend that Angel Dust is the great album of all time. They have also, undoubtedly, performed the greatest cover of a 90s commercial jingle

There are many great bands, but none as great as Faith No More, who are able to create more interesting sounds than any other band in history. They are the epitome of the golden rule of entertainment, 'do not be boring'.

Their name has nothing to do with religion by the way.

Michigan is not my favorite wrestling team or University, but they are pretty dang impressive. They are wildly successful in many diverse areas, from all of their sports teams, not just wrestling, to their research and academics.

Leaders of the West indeed.

I'm not sure if that works as a connection but we're only going to be doing this bit for a few more weeks and I'm just trying to cover my favorite bands and programs at this point.
