Arizona State defeated Stanford on Saturday, 18-17 in a back-and-forth dual that came down to the final match. Check out the article below to see a recap and full results of this incredible dual.

Stanford Strikes First

The dual started at 125 pounds with a ranked matchup between #19 Nico Provo and #25 Richard Figueroa. Provo was down late but then used a takedown in the third period to force overtime before securing another takedown and two back points to win a high-scoring 13-8 bout. At 133, Dom LaJoie kept the ball rolling for Stanford with a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Carter Dibert to give Stanford a 6-0 lead to start the dual.

3-Straight Ranked Wins For The Sun Devils

Despite the slow start, the Sun Devils responded with three consecutive ranked wins at 141, 149, and 157. #24 Jesse Vasquez who has been out with injury most of the year, defeated #30 Jason Miranda in a controlling 8-3 victory. Then, #3 Kyle Parco defeated fellow All-American #8Jaden Abas by securing the match's only takedown, winning 5-1.

157 pounds was the premier match of the dual featuring #3 Jacori Teemer and #6 Daniel Cardenas. Teemer defeated Cardenas back in December at the CKLV in a dominating 14-6 major decision. This match was much closer with Teemer leading 3-0 at the end of the first but Cardenas responded with an escape and takedown of his own in the second to lead 4-3 heading into the final period. Then, after an escape to tie the match, Teemer blasted through a double leg for the match-deciding takedown.

Stanford Responds

The Sun Devils’ three straight wins put them ahead 9-6 halfway through the dual but Stanford didn’t give up. #24 Hunter Garvin won an overtime match over #31 Chance McLane and then Tye Monteiro won a high-scoring match over Cael Valencia to give the dual meet lead back to Stanford, 12-9.

Then, at 184, #25 Tony Negron won a close decision over Stanford’s Jack Darrah to tie the dual up at 12 with just two matches to go. At 197 pounds, #15 Nick Stemmet came up big for Stanford with a tech fall over Damion Schunke. That gave Stanford a 17-12 lead heading into the final match of the night at 285 pounds.

Schultz Slams The Door For The Sun Devils

With Stanford leading 17-12, Arizona State needed three-time All-American #4 Cohlton Schultz to record a pin to win the dual for the Sun Devils. Schultz’s opponent in the final match of the night was Peter Ming. Schultz and Ming have wrestled twice in their college careers with Schultz winning both - one by pin and the other by major decision. Schultz took control early and led 7-1 after the first period off of a takedown and a four-point turn. Then, with just under 20 seconds to go in the second period, Schultz put the nail in the coffin for the pin to clinch the dual for the Sun Devils.
