The University of Iowa had a fresh look during its dual against California Baptist on Saturday, November 4 in Riverside. Eight of the 10 starters were different from last season’s team, including three transfers.

The Hawkeyes controlled the meet from start to finish by scoring takedowns, dominating rides, and earning near-fall points. Iowa took advantage of the new three-point takedown by earning major decisions and techs that would have been decisions and major decisions last year.

Iowa sophomore Drake Ayala actually gave up the first takedown of the dual but stormed back for an 18-8 major decision over Elijah Griffin at 125 pounds. Brody Teske (133), Aiden Riggins (174), Brennan Swafford (184), Zach Glazier (197), and Bradley Hill (285) earned major decisions, while Real Woods (141), and Michael Caliendo (165) secured technical falls.

Teske and Woods were the only starters in the line-up from last season’s team. Franek and Caliendo were All-Americans at North Dakota State and Victor Voinovich — a 2-0 winner at 149 — transferred from Oklahoma State.

Iowa’s next dual is against Oregon State on Sunday, November 19 in Iowa City.
