149lbs NCWA National Championship Consolation Finals: Alex Broadwater (UMBC) p. Jeff Slaughter (LSU), 1:25. Broadwater, the top seed and returning national champ at 149, was upset in the quarterfinals by Cody Streuning of Northampton Community College, a Pennsylvania state placer. After the loss, Broadwater rallied back to third, pinning three of four of his next opponents. Struening placed sixth. Here, Broadwater faces Slaughter of Louisiana State University. Slaughter was an All-American at the Junior Nationals in Fargo in high school, placing ahead of the very tough Ryan Cubberly of Ohio. Slaughter won a Louisiana state title and was a state runner-up in Oklahoma. He wrestled two seasons for DI Nebraska, where he had a winning record. Broadwater was a multiple-time Maryland state placer in high school and has placed high at numerous DII and DIII tournaments, including beating a DIII All-American.
