With nearly 200 teams taking part in the Division III portion of THE Spring Games, there will be tons of talent on display for the month of top-tier competition.

The Spring Games kicks into high gear in the coming days, with the “World’s Largest College Softball Event” seeing hundreds of teams visit Florida in the coming month for hundreds of games against teams they might not normally face.

Staggering. Incredible. Unprecedented. Mind-boggling.

How about a trivia question to open up this week’s Division III Insider Column?

Wartburg has taken virtually every possible path to the top of the Division III mountain during the past three decades, but the Knights have never won quite the way they did Saturday.

Wartburg nearly ran the table Friday, winning 14 of its 15 matches while racing to the front of the pack at the Division III NCAA Championships.

Wartburg College’s Kyle Briggs, ranked No. 1 at 184 by Flowrestling, has been one of the most exciting Division III wrestlers in the country over the past three years.

One of the fiercest rivalries in college wrestling resumes Thursday after a one-year absence.

It started with a conversation at a 30-year high school reunion in 2001.

It’s fun to look back now that the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) and its end-of-year national tournament will likely disband. This was THE women’s national collegiate wrestling championship that counted for years since it combined schools from every division.

Kyle Briggs of Wartburg didn’t get exactly what he wanted, but his consolation prize was a major decision in the finals. Don’t feel too bad for Briggs, though. The 174-pounder crushed the field by picking up four falls before settling for a shutout win in his fifth match.

They aren’t keeping team scores at the NWCA Division III Coaches Association National Championships, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t keeping tabs. Many of the best D3 wrestlers in the country have an opportunity to compete this weekend in a makeshift national tournament that came together in less than a month. 

When college wrestling returns on New Years Day, it will have been nearly 300 days since the last NCAA matches were wrestled. It's been a long, strange year since everything was canceled in March, but we did it. We finally made it. College wrestling is back, and I'm here to help get you ready for the opening weekend of action with a little information on every D1 event going down this weekend. 

Augsburg University and Wartburg College have had a stranglehold on Division III wrestling for the last 25 years. The two national powerhouses have been on an incredible run and have set a high standard for the rest of the DIII field. The last time one of these programs did not finish on top of the DIII wrestling world was 1994, when Ithaca edged Wartburg by 2.5 points. Augsburg kept the streak alive last season when they put together an impressive team performance in Roanoke, Virginia, to claim the 2019 team title. The Auggies ended Wartburg’s run in dominant fashion thanks to four individuals claiming national titles and an additional three claiming All-American status.
