No. 16 Virginia Wrestling Earns Three Wins at Quad Meet

Cavaliers open the season with victories over Anderson, Chattanooga, and Ohio

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia wrestling team opened the 2012-13 campaign with three victories in its season-opening quad meet, defeating Anderson (37-12), Ohio (34-6), and Chattanooga (27-9).

“This was a huge win out of the gate, starting the season with victories over three quality teams, especially Chattanooga,” said head coach Steve Garland. “There were a lot of good matchups out there and I was pleased with how we did here in our first week. Our schedule is definitely built with challenges for us. The team that we are now is going to be much different than the team we will be in January and February. The important thing for us this year is to not get too far ahead of ourselves or too high on the highs and too low on the lows. We really want to stay in the middle.”

In the most anticipated match of the day, Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.), ranked No. 9 in the preseason InterMat rankings, defeated ChattanoogaÂ’s 14th-ranked Nick Soto, 6-1, at 125 pounds. Snyder also won by forfeit at 125 pounds in the Ohio meet.

In the opening bout, Virginia defeated Anderson, 37-12, with the Cavaliers winning eight of the ten bouts with Nick Hermann, Jimmy Nehls and Zach Nye and each winning by pinning their opponents. Dusty Floyd earned a major decision.

In the middle bout, Virginia defeated Ohio, 34-6 with Jon Fausey pinning his opponent. Jedd Moore, Nick Sulzer, Stephen Doty, and Mike Salopek won by major decisions.

The Cavaliers closed out the day with a 27-9 victory over Chattanooga. Fausey and Doty earned their second major decisions of the day. Moore and Sulzer earned technical falls at 157 and 165 pounds.

“We had a lot of guys who stars really shined bright today,” Garland said. “The win for Matt Snyder was great. Sulzer, Fausey and Doty all did a great job today. Jedd Moore was probably the best of the bunch. He was totally dominant today. Overall, out core group of guys did great.”

The Cavaliers hit the road for the first time next Saturday (Nov. 10) at the Gardner-Webb Duals. UVa will take on George Mason at 9 a.m. and the host Bulldogs at 11 a.m.
