50 More Upsets In Week 2!

The hits keep coming! More than 50 upsets for the second week in a row!

Credit to all the wrestlers who are putting it out on the line. It's also still insanely early so expect a lot of movement as the rankings all settle the later we go into the season. Plus there is still plenty of time for wrestlers to avenge losses and regain lost ground.

Additional caveats apply, as many of these so-called upsets will not be considered as such in hindsight. Underclassmen who have yet to establish a D1 body of work start the season ranked low or not at all. Experienced wrestlers jump levels and by the end of the year will have established themselves as being in tiers above those wrestlers to whom they are, for now, considered underdogs.

A few of the biggest upsets below, followed by ever technical upset we could find the results this week. Note: HM stands for 'Honorable Mention', or someone ranked between 25th and 33rd in the rankings.

133lbs - HM Sam Latona, Virginia Tech over #5 Jesse Mendez, Ohio State, D;3-2

A gutsy match from both wrestlers. Latona shakes off the loss he suffered to Pat Phillips of F&M at the Southeast Open and defeats true freshman Mendez, hot off Mendez' big win over Lucas Byrd at the MSU Open.

174lbs - #22 Edmond Ruth, Illinois over #9 Peyton Mocco, Missouri, D;7-5

Edmond appears to be finding his stride now that he's joined the Illini program where his older brother Ed Ruth coaches. Mocco left it all on the mat in their highly-entertaining finals bout at the Tiger Style Invite, but Ruth prevailed. Ruth also has two wins over Darrien Roberts (more on him shortly) and only 1 loss to #6 Ethan Smith of Ohio State on the season. He's looking more and more like a contender with every week.

125lbs - Elijah Griffin, California Baptist over #6 Kysen Terukina, Iowa State, D;4-2

Like Mendez, Terukina is coming off a big upset himself, having knocked off Wisconsin All-American Eric Barnett in week one. Griffin is one to watch, as his only loss this season is to Cal Poly's Antonio Lorenzo, who just won the Tiger Style Invite.

174lbs - HM Darrien Roberts, Oklahoma over #8 Philip Conigliaro, Harvard, D;4-3

Roberts was himself upset this week when he lost to unranked Joey Milano of NC State (although its likely Milano earns a ranking should he establish himself as the Wolfpack's starter at 174). The Sooner junior made his match against Conigliaro count, though, as he battled his way to a one-point victory, scoring the match-winning takedown with a perfectly-time throw by in the final seconds.

149lbs - #19 Caleb Henson, Virginia Tech over #2 Sammy Sasso, Ohio State, D;5-3

It was the big news on Friday and has already been discussed quite a bit in the meantime. The young freshman Hokie from Georgia makes a statement in his first collegiate dual meet.

125lbs - #22 Jake Ferri, Kent State over #8 Caleb Smith, Appalachian State, D;5-2

Smith had a huge win at the 2022 NCAA Championships over two-time All-American Pat McKee, which, along with a full schedule replete with many quality wins and not much in the way of bad losses, earned him a top ten ranking coming into the season. Golden Flash Jake Ferri was unconcerned about this ranking, though, and defeated Smith in the finals of the App State Invite.
