U23 World Championships Match Notes - Day 5

Amit Elor goes won a historic third gold medal on the same day that Alex Hedrick won bronze and Tanner Sloan reached the finals.

U23 World Championships Match Notes - Day 5

Amit Elor (72 kg) will attempt to win her third World gold medal this year after winning U20 and Seniors. It would be the first time an American has accomplished this feat. Felicity Taylor (53 kg) and Alex Hedrick (57 kg) will wrestle for bronze while three men's freestylers are in the semifinals. The action begins at 10:45 a.m. Eastern.

SEMIFINAL (70 kg): Amir Yazdani (IRI) over Yahya Thomas (USA), 4-2

First period: Thomas scores first on an activity clock violation to take a 1-0 lead with a minute to go. Thomas picks up an additional point for a step-out for a 2-0 lead into the break.

Second period: Yazdani gets a takedown on a double out of bounds to take a 2-2 criteria lead then picks up an activity clock violation against Thomas to take a 3-2 lead. The lost challenge gives Yazdani a 4-2 win a spot in the gold medal finals. Thomas will wrestle for bronze. 

SEMIFINAL (79 kg):  Daulet Yergesh (KAZ) over Carter Starocci (USA), 8-7

First period: Starocci scores first an activity clock violation for a 1-0 lead with a minute to go. He takes that lead into the break. 

Second period: Yergesh picks up a takedown and gives up three turns to go ahead 8-1. Starocci finishes a takedown then locks up a leg lace for one turn and cuts the lead to 8-5 but Yergesh still leads win a minute to go. Another takedown by Starocci makes the final score 8-7 in favor of Yerdesh. Starocci will wrestle for bronze tomorrow. 

SEMIFINAL (97 kg): Tanner Sloan (USA) over Islam Ilyasov (AZE), 10-2

Sloan has a 4-2 lead late in the match then pours on the offense with three straight takedowns for a 10-2 win and a spot in the gold medal finals tomorrow. 

BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (53 kg): Anastasia Blayvas (GER) over Felicity Taylor (USA), 3-3 

First period: Taylor scores first on an activity clock violation with a minute to go for a 1-0 lead. Blayvas scores two on an exposure off a cradle for a 2-1 lead but Taylor gets two on a takedown for a 3-2 lead at the break. 

Second period: Blayvas scores one point on a step out after a lengthy scramble to take a 3-3 criteria lead. with 30 seconds to go. Blayvas holds on to a low single at the end of the match and that's how the match ends. Blayvas takes bronze and Taylor places fifth. 

BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (57 kg): Alex Hedrick (USA) tech Laura Almaganbetova (KAZ), 13-2

First period: Hedrick scores a takedown a turn on a trap-arm gut for a 4-0 lead with 1:16 to go. Hedrick tacks on another point on a step-out for a 5-0 lead into the break. 

Second period: Almaganbetova gets on the board with a takedown and cuts the lead to 5-2 with two minutes to go. Hedrick scores on a lengthy go behind then locks up a trap-arm gut and ends the match with a 13-2 win. Hendrick wins bronze. 

GOLD MEDAL MATCH: Amit Elor (USA) tech Wiktoria Choluj (POL), 11-0

First period: Elor scores a takedown on the edge for a 2-0 lead with 1:39 left in the period. Elor picks up an activity clock point for a 3-0 lead with 30 seconds remaining the tacks on a takedown and a gut wrench for a 7-0 lead with seconds to go in the first. 

Second period: Elor scores two on a go-behind takedown then locks up a lace and wins 11-0. She won her third title this year: U20, U23, and Senior.
