On Friday, August 5, Davidson announced Nate Carr Jr. as the program's next head coach. Carr is heading to Davidson from Lock Haven University where he spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach. Check out the release below for the full details on Carr's career.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Nate Carr Jr. has been named the 13th head wrestling coach at Davidson College, as announced by Director of Athletics Chris Clunie on Friday.  

"We are thrilled to welcome Nate to Davidson as our next head wrestling coach," Clunie said. "Nate has an incredibly impressive wrestling and coaching background, and we look forward to the tremendous impact he will have on our scholar-athletes, our wrestling program and our community."

Carr Jr. is a member of one of college wrestling's most accomplished families, with a storied career of his own.

"I am extremely honored to be named the head wrestling coach at Davidson College," Carr Jr. said. "Thank you to our Athletic Director Chris Clunie for entrusting me with the opportunity to serve this 100-year program.

"I am truly excited to build an elite atmosphere at Davidson on and off the mat."

A native of Gray, Ga., his coaching career began as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Virginia from 2012 to the summer of 2013 and at the University of Maryland the following year.

Carr Jr. was a senior-level athlete and coach at the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club, where he competed in senior-level competitions, while also assisting in coaching the Cornell wrestling team. There, he helped coach two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Tournament and five All-Americans in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

While at Lock Haven, Carr. Jr. was an integral part in leading LHU to its first Mid-American Conference (MAC) title in program history in 2022. LHU also captured back-to-back Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles in 2018 and 2019.  

During Carr's tenure, he was instrumental in guiding four student-athletes to achieve All-American status at the Division I Wrestling Championships (2019: Chance Marsteller, Kyle Shoop. 2018: Ronnie Perry, Chance Marsteller). Carr's guidance also saw current LHU assistant coach Ronnie Perry become the first 15-seed to reach a national final during his Cinderella-run to the 149-pound finals in 2018. 

Under Carr, 13 athletes at Lock Haven earned either EWL or MAC individual conference crowns (10 EWL, 3 MAC), including two athletes at the 2022 MAC Championships.

Sixteen of his scholar-athletes made the NWCA D1 Academic All-American Team, while the team finished with the 13th highest GPA in the country in 2018 and the 22nd highest in 2019.

He was also responsible for designing year-long weight training programs, fundraising, develop the program's alumni engagement, coordinate summer camps and expanding the program's social media.

Carr Jr. – the second Black men's head coach at Davidson and the fourth active Black Division I head men's wrestling coach - also owns NCJ Wrestling Camps where he teaches, coaches and develops youth wrestlers through techniques and series using proven Carr Family Methods. The Carr Family holds the NCAA record for the Most All-Americans in one family with five. His brother, David, is a senior at Iowa State, a two-time All-American and a 2021 NCAA Champion.

His father, Nate Carr Sr., was a three-time NCAA champion at Iowa State and won a bronze medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, while competing for Team USA. His uncle, Jimmy Carr was the youngest American wrestler to compete at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. His other uncle, Fletcher Carr, was the first Black Division 1 Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Kentucky.

 Carr Jr. was a 2007 NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) national champion and then wrestled at Iowa State, where he was a two-year starter at 149 pounds. In 2010, he was named a U.S. Freestyle All-American and finished in second place at the 2015 Canada Cup International.

Carr Jr. graduated from Iowa State in 2012 with a BA in Liberal Studies and a Master's degree in Sport Science in May 2021.
