Fargo Team Preview: Pennsylvania Is Loaded With Title Threats

Pennsylvania had a strong showing in Fargo in 2021 by dominating en route to the 16U title and finishing second to Illinois in the Junior Division in a close team race. Pennsylvania recently finished in third place at the 16U National Duals after dropping a tight dual to Wisconsin in the semifinals. PA will be bringing plenty of established studs along with some young hammers to Fargo this year, with nearly a dozen nationally ranked wrestlers and many honorable mention guys. Check out all of Pennsylvania’s Fargo freestyle All Americans from last year and the top guys out of Pennsylvania to keep an eye on throughout the week in North Dakota.

Hammers To Watch

Bo Bassett (16U/120) — Bassett is one of the most talked-about wrestlers in the country as just a rising freshman. After dominating his way to a Cadet World Championship last year, Bassett lost to fellow Cadet World medalist Luke Lilledahl in the finals of the U17 World Team Trials. Bassett will be looking to get back to his dominant ways in North Dakota and may be the favorite to win a stop sign.

#7 Mason Gibson (Junior/126) — Mason Gibson has been on everyone’s radar for years now ever since winning a Super 32 title as a middle schooler. After finishing third in freestyle and first in Greco last year in the U16 division, Gibson missed the whole season after suffering a knee injury. As just a junior, the recent Cornell commitment Gibson is back and will be looking to win another stop sign.

#14 Pierson Manville (Junior/145) — Manville was a runner-up last year in freestyle and won a title in Greco in the 16U division. The younger brother of past Greco Senior World Team member Mason Manville made a name for himself after winning a PIAA AAA state championship this season, picking up wins over returning state champions Tyler Kasak and Briar Priest along the way. Manville is coming off an excellent performance at the Junior National Duals, where he finished 8-0 with all early terminations.

HM Jude Swisher (Junior/138) — A three-time PIAA AAA state medalist and returning Fargo All-American. After finishing fifth last year in the Junior division, Swisher will return to Fargo looking to improve on that performance before kicking off his college career at Penn in the fall.

#3 Rocco Welsh (Junior/160) — Welsh has had quite a year. Since taking third in Fargo last year, he’s taken second at Super 32, won an Ironman title, placed third in a loaded Powerade bracket, and won his first PIAA AAA state championship in dominant fashion.

Up-And-Coming Prospects Who Need To Be On Your Radar

#14 Vince Bouzakis (16U/145) — The younger brother of U20 World Team member and future Ohio State Buckeye Nic Bouzakis, Vince Bouzakis is a returning Fargo All-American. After finishing sixth last year in Fargo, he won a Powerade title as a freshman. Bouzakis most recently was excellent at the 16U National Duals where he finished 8-0. Despite being up three weight classes from where he competed during the folkstyle season, Bouzakis will likely be a title contender in Fargo.

#19 Nathan Desmond (Junior/113) — After placing seventh last year in Fargo, Desmond had an excellent folkstyle season as a freshman. He finished fifth at Super, 32, second at the Ironman, won titles at the Beast of the East and Escape the Rock, and was dominant on his way to a PIAA AAA state championship down at 106 pounds. Desmond seems to be competing at a more natural weight class for him now at 113 and will definitely be a guy to watch out for in Fargo.

HM Sam Herring (16U/120) — Herring made the 16U finals in Fargo last year at 106 pounds before falling to Anthony Knox. He won a medal at Super 32 last fall as just an eighth-grader and most recently had an extremely impressive performance at the 16U National Duals, where he finished 8-0 with eight shutout technical falls.

#13 Kollin Rath (16U/145) — Despite not having many freestyle stats, Rath is a proven winner. As a rising sophomore, Rath already has two Super 32 medals and was third at the PIAA AAA state tournament this season, with his only loss coming to #3 Mac Church.

#3 Aaron Seidel (16U/106) — Despite failing to place in Fargo last year in freestyle, Seidel has made big gains in his international styles over the last year. After winning a PIAA AA state championship this year as a freshman, Seidel most recently had a really strong performance at the 16U National Duals where he finished 7-1, only taking a 6-5 loss to Jace Hedeman of Iowa.
