Penn State Is #1 & Gable Is On Another Planet - Week 13 Round-Up

From the Penn State - Iowa dual to incredible upsets, this week in college wrestling had it all! Take a look below at some of the biggest stories from the past week.

PSU Takes Out Iowa In Carver

What A Dual! Penn State went into Carver-Hawkeye Arena and ended Iowa’s 29 dual winning streak with a 19-13 victory. This was likely the dual of the year and it could not have been closer. Of the 10 matches, 5 were decided by three points or less with two going into overtime. Penn State won 3 of those 5 matches and both of the overtime matches - Nick Lee over Jaydin Eierman and Carter Starocci over Michael Kemerer. The outcome of this dual builds major anticipation for the team race in March at the national tournament. While Penn State is in the lead (on paper), the margins are small and the Hawkeyes are still in the hunt for a team title.

UNI And Iowa State Upset Oklahoma State

It’s been a challenging week for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. After potentially losing AJ Ferrari for the season due to his serious car accident, Oklahoma State was upset by both Northern Iowa (19-15) and Iowa State (20-12) over the weekend. In the Northern Iowa dual, upsets by Derek Holschlag (157), Austin Yant (165), and Lance Runyon (174) were the difference-makers for the Panthers. Iowa State was propelled to victory by upset wins from Kysen Terukina (125) and Marcus Coleman (184). Up until this point in the season, Oklahoma State was 10-0 in dual meets and had only lost a collective 13 matches in dual competition. Between the two duals, the Cowboys dropped 11 matches and were outscored 39-27. Oklahoma State will have more than enough opportunities to get things back on track with upcoming duals against South Dakota State, Missouri, and Iowa.

Gable Puts It On Mason Parris

Last year, Gable Steveson’s toughest collegiate opponent was Michigan’s Mason Parris. The two met in the national finals where Steveson beat Parris in a controlling, 8-4 victory. On Friday night, Steveson sent a message to Parris and every heavyweight in the country. Gable put together a dominant 18-8 win with 8 total takedowns in the match - 5 coming in the third period! Gable Steveson is the best heavyweight in the world…end of discussion. Now the question is how dominant he’ll finish his final collegiate season. He’s currently 7-0 on the season and has won every match by bonus points. It’s hard to imagine anyone bonusing their way through the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments, but if anyone can do it, it’s Gable Steveson.

Buchanan Bests Elam In Top 5 Showdown

Wyoming’s #5 Stephen Buchanan experienced a minor setback two weeks ago when he was pinned by NDSU’s Owen Pentz. On Saturday, Buchanan proved that loss may have been a fluke in his 3-2 win over #4 Rocky Elam. After a scoreless first period, Buchanan got out to a 1-0 lead after an escape early in the second. Elam responded with a takedown but Buchanan was able to earn another quick escape to tie the score at 2 going into the third period. Elam chose down in the third but Buchanan put on a tough ride for the entirety of the final period to earn a riding time point and a 3-2 victory. Buchanan has been impressive all year with ranked wins over #6 Eric Schultz, HM Alan Clothier, #8 Patrick Brucki, #14 Yonger Bastida, and #4 Rocky Elam. Stephen Buchan is proving to be a legitimate title contender and one of the most exciting wrestlers to watch at 197 pounds.

Wyatt Hendrickson Is Pinning Everyone

On Thursday night, Wyatt Hendrickson recorded his tenth pin of the season against Cal Baptist’s Christopher Island. On top of that, he extended his record to 14-0 and is only one pin behind holding the lead for most pins in the country. Currently, Anthony Sobotker (Binghamton) and King Sandoval (Maryland) share the lead at 11. What’s remarkable is that Hendrickson has reached double-digit pins in only 14 matches while Sandoval has wrestled 23 and Sobotker is at 25 matches on the year. Hendrickson has 6 more matches before the conference tournament and keeping track of his pins will be interesting to watch for the remainder of the season.
