Every Upset From Week 7 Of College Wrestling

There were 11 total upsets in the last week of Division 1 college wrestling. Take a look below to see a breakdown of some of the biggest upsets and a list of every upset result.

A Pair Of Upsets For OK State

Oklahoma State went on the road Friday night against Wyoming and came away with a 30-3 dual win. While the score was lopsided, three of OK State’s nine wins were decided by 2 points or less. On top of that Dustin Plott and Wyatt Sheets pulled off upset wins in their respective matches in Laramie.

In a low-scoring, defensive bout, Sheets secured an escape in the first tie-breaker overtime and then rode-out #11 Jacob Wright to win 2-1. Sheets’ win over Wright avenges a 3-2 loss from last season at the Cowboy Challenge Tournament in February of 2021. Similarly, Dustin Plott’s win over #13 Hayden Hastings avenges two losses from last season. After a scoreless first period, Plott secured a reversal and a takedown in the second to build a 4-1 lead going into the third. Then in the final frame, Plott widened the gap with another takedown and dominant ride to win a controlling, 7-2 bout. After battling a shoulder injury all last season, Plott looks to be fully healthy and ready to challenge the nation’s best at 174 pounds.

Munoz > Samuelson > Geer

Dakota Geer might be a two-time All-American but Tate Samuelson has his number! Samuelson is now 3-0 in his collegiate career against Geer and was able to secure a 3-1 overtime victory in their latest showdown last Friday night. After trading escapes in the second and third periods, Samuelson converted on a clean double from space just 20 seconds into the sudden victory period to secure the win. A three-time national qualifier, Samuelson has yet to earn All-American honors but should be able to challenge to make the podium in Detroit this March.

Tate Samuelson would have had a remarkable weekend if it weren’t for Oregon State freshman Trey Munoz. The two battled in the finals of the Reno Tournament of Champions and Munoz came out on top in a close, 3-2 victory. Munoz used a quick, first-period takedown to build his lead and strong defense the remainder of the match to fend off the veteran Samuelson. After wrestling for Arizona State at 174 last season and going 0-2 at last year’s NCAA Tournament, Munoz looks ready to move up the ranks at 184 pounds for Oregon State.

Devine And Bastida Come Through For Iowa State

Going into the Iowa State-Purdue dual, we knew the “toss-up” matches would decide the winner. Iowa State won 4 matches by 3 points or less and had two upset wins in the process to take the dual 23-13. At 174 pounds, unranked Joel Devine used savvy scrambling in the first period to earn a takedown and took a 2-1 lead into the second over #19 Gerrit Nijenhuis. Though Nijenhuis road Devine out in the second period, Devine returned the favor in the third and even picked up a stalling point to take the 4-1 win.

At 197 pounds, #14 Yonger Bastida notched his second upset win in 2 weeks by taking out #11 Thomas Penola, 6-4. Bastida, a freestyle specialist, made his money on his feet with 3 total takedowns in the match (1 in each period). With his win over Penola, and after defeating #5 Jacob Warner two weeks ago, Bastida has proven he doesn’t need elite mat wrestling skills to be a threat at 197 pounds this season.

Watch Out For Devan Turner At 133

Two weeks ago Devan Turner brought home 4th place honors at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. This weekend, Turner took home gold at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Turner was crucial to the Beaver’s team title performance and capped off his win tournament with a 7-3 win over #12 Chance Rich in the finals. Turner used a slick arm-drag to a single leg to get on the board in the first period but had to grind out the rest of the match to get the win. At 4-3 with just 10 seconds left in the match, Turner put the proverbial “nail in the coffin” with a perfectly time single-leg takedown. How high can Devan Turner climb up the ladder this year at 133 pounds? We’ll find out when he has to navigate a challenging schedule in January and February and face off against the likes of #7 Michael Colaiocco, #11 Michael McGee, #16 Haiden Drury, and HM Job Greenwood.
