33 Upsets In Wild Week Of College Wrestling

2 returning NCAA Champions and 14 total wrestlers ranked in the top 10 were upset in the third week of the NCAA season. Take a look below for a breakdown of the biggest upsets and a full list of every upset from the past week.

Peyton Robb Stuns Austin O’Connor

The upset of the season up to this point was undoubtedly Peyton Robb’s 5-2 win over returning 149-pound national champion, Austin O’Connor. Robb won the takedown battle over O’Connor 2 takedowns to none - he secured a takedown at the end of the first period and then iced the match with a late takedown in the third. On Sunday, Robb almost took out another NCAA champ when he lost in the finals of the Daktronics Open to David Carr in overtime. Last week revealed Robb as a legit contender at 157 this year and can is capable of taking out anyone in the country.

Julian Ramirez Wins In Controversy Over Shane Griffith

Cornell freshman Julian Ramirez secured a first-period takedown and held a 3-2 lead with just 20 seconds left in the match when a scrambled ensued causing controversy. Shane Griffith came out on top with what could have been called a takedown on the edge of the mat. The ref didn't award two and the call was confirmed after a challenge by the Stanford coaching staff. Though the story of the match was the last sequence, Julian Ramirez showed in the rest of the match he will be a force this year and will be competitive with everyone in the 165 pound field.

Mastro Jumping Levels

Trevor Mastrogiovanni took out returning 3rd place All-American Pat McKee in a controlling 10-6 decision. This is a huge win for Mastrogiovanni as he finished in the round of 16 last year at NCAAs and had never defeated an All-American prior to the match with McKee. The Cowboys need major production from Mastro this year if they hope to win a team trophy in March and challenge the likes of Iowa and Penn State at the top.

Heinselman’s Win Over Latona Huge For Buckeyes

Malik Heinselman continues to make steady progress in his college career and showed he’s jumped levels again with a 5-2 win over Sam Latona. While Latona finished 6th last year at NCAAs, Heinselman has never done better than win one match at the big show. Not only does this show Heinelman is ready to challenge for All-American honors, his win was crucial to Ohio State’s win over Virginia Tech. Without Heinselman’s upset win, Virginia Tech would have defeated Ohio State in the dual.

Del Garbino PINS Cassioppi

No one could have predicted Jack Del Garbino’s pin over Tony Cassioppi in the final match of the Iowa - Princeton Dual. Del Garbino looked to be in danger as Cassioppi was taking him over for the fall but timed his roll through perfectly. Will that ever happen to Cassioppi again? Probably not, but the win was highly entertaining and an unforgettable one for Del Garbino.

Clarke over Chad Red

#17 Kizhan Clarke is now 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in overtime matches. Last week, Clarke used a takedown in overtime to defeat Ohio State’s Jordan Decatur and he replicated that win against 3X All-American #8 Chad Red in their dual last Wednesday night. Clarke, a transfer from American to North Carolina, has spent the majority of his career up at 149 where he was an NCAA qualifier in 2020. The move down to 141 seems to be paying off and he’ll be tested once again this week against #4 Sebastian Rivera in North Carolina’s dual against Rutgers on Saturday.

Lehigh’s Hines And Meyer Show Up BIG Against Phillippi And Wentzel

Malyke Hines and Brian Meyer took out 2 of Pittsburgh’s best on the way to propelling Lehigh to a 26-9 dual meet win. Hines was trailing 5-4 at the closing seconds of the 3rd period when he was able to secure a defensive fall and get the win over #8 Mickey Phillippi. Meyer used takedowns in the first and third period to take out the returning NCAA runner-up #2 Jake Wentzel in a tight, 4-3 match. Hines and Meyer should vault up the rankings and will be interesting to watch for Lehigh as the season unfolds.
