Five Top 10 Upsets In Week 2

The second weekend of collegiate action saw 28 upsets, 5 of which were over wrestlers ranked in the top 10. Below are some of the biggest upset stories of the week along with every upset we could find. If you saw an upset we missed, email jonathan.kozak@flosports.tv so we can be sure to include it.

Worthing Upends All-American Turley

Last season John Worthing failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament and finished his season with 10-6 record. After his 12-6 win over #8 Jackson Turley, it seems pretty clear Worthing has jumped levels. Still a freshman, this is a great sign for Worthing’s future and for Clarion moving forward.

Doug Zapf - Big And Bad At 157

Doug Zapf came into his college career as a 133 pounder but looks to be finding his home at 157. Though he lost to HM Johnny Lovett (CMU) in his opening match at the Journeymen Classic, Zapf was able to outlast Lehigh’s #9 Josh Humphreys in a high-scoring, 9-8 match. Zapf will have his fair share of tests at 157 this season as Penn is set to compete at Midlands next month. Also with the EIWA’s depth at 157, Zapf will have his rematch with Humphreys and a huge test against Princeton’s #7 Quincy Monday in February.

Watch Out 141, Andrew Alirez Is Here

Andrew Alirez brought a ton of hype with him into his collegiate career after he defeated Joey McKenna, Yahya Thomas and Evan Henderson in freestyle at 2020 Senior Nationals. Alirez hasn’t had a bad college career -  he was a national qualifier during the Covid year and was injured last season. Mostly Alirez hasn’t had the opportunity to compete against many top 10 wrestlers. However now, down at 141 and healthy, Alirez looks to be a legitimate All-American threat. Alirez took out #9 Allan Hart in overtime over the weekend and looks to be back to 100%. Alirez won’t have any time off against top tier guys as he’s set to wrestle #13 Dom Demas this Sunday in Northern Colorado’s dual against Oklahoma.

Bartlett Grits Out Win Over Crooks

Penn State needs major production out of Beau Bartlett at 149 this year in order to unseat Iowa as National Champs. While Bartlett went 2-0 in his opening matches of the season, it’s hard to tell if he’s ready to challenge the best at 149. He majored Sacred Heart’s Shaun Williams but struggled to get his offense going against Oregon State’s #22 Cory Crooks. Bartlett took a 1-0 decision into the third and ultimately won the match by riding out Crooks for the entirety of the period. While it’s not the dominant win most Penn State fans might want out of Bartlett, he found a way to get the win against a seasoned opponent.

Jesse Vasquez Is Ready Now

While he still has a redshirt available, Jesse Vasquez looks to be the best option for Arizona State at 141. Not only did Vasquez win his 2 wrestle-off matches, last weekend he won the App State Invitational with 3 bonus point wins and a pin over Indiana’s #19 Cayden Rooks. If Arizona State chooses to go with Vasquez right away, he’ll face a major test this week against #13 Dom Demas in Arizona State’s dual against Oklahoma.

Wolfgram Takes Out Heindselman

West Virginia’s big man, Michael Wolfgram missed qualifying for the NCAA Tournament last season after going 10-6 and placing 7th at the Big 12 Tournament. Wolfgram’s 3-2 win over #17 Josh Heindselman was the highlight of the dual for Mountaineers and a great sign for the start of Wolfgram’s season. After losing to Heindselman 6-2 last season, this is an early sign that Wolfgram has made significant improvements and is ready to challenge the best heavyweights in the Big 12.
