Going into the match, it would have been hard to find anyone outside of Casey Swiderski’s friends and family who were picking him to leave with a win. Jesse Mendez was the pound for pound #1 ranked high school wrestler and has was coming off making a junior world team as a junior in high school. However, that didn’t stop Swiderski from getting the 7-5 win and earning the #1 ranking at 138 lbs.

Match Summary

After a minute of trading offensive attacks, Casey Swiderski struck first and scored on a single leg. After an escape, Mendez struck back with a takedown of his own to go up 3-2. Swiderski earned an escape of his own making the match 3-3 at the end of the first period. In the second period, Mendez earned a quick escape and, despite action on their feet, the period ended with Mendez up 4-3.

The start of the third period marked the beginning of the turning point in the match. Mendez already had 2 cautions because of false starts and gave up a point for starting early. After an escape, Swiderski took a 5-4 lead with 1:17 remaining in the match. Rather than playing defense, Swiderski went on the attack and scored a takedown on a double leg with 1:05 left in the match. Mendez earned a quick escape but was unable to penetrate Swiderski’s defense and the match ended 7-5 in favor of Casey Swiderski.
