USA Women Take Narrow Lead Into Final Day Of Jr Worlds

The second full day of wrestling concluded in women’s freestyle at the 2021 Junior World Championships. Only the medal rounds for five weights remain and the team race will be decided in the final session of wrestling. Take a look below to see the current standings and what Team USA needs to do to take home the team title.

Historic Day For Team USA

Up until today, the women’s freestyle team for Team USA has never had more than 1 champion at Junior Worlds. Thanks to gold medal performances from Emily Shilson, Amit Elor, and Kylie Welker, that record has been shattered! All three won junior world gold with first period tech falls in their finals matches. Kennedy Blades has a chance to extend the record and will wrestle for a gold medal tomorrow (Friday, August 20th) against Lily Schneider (GER). On top of the golds, Team USA can bring home bronze medals with Jaslynn Gallegos, Alara Boyd and Korina Blades. Gallegos and Blades are sitting in the bronze medal match but Boyd will have to win one repechage match to make the medal round.

India And Russia Still In The Hunt

Despite Team USA's success, India is only three points behind and is capable of catching USA for the team title. Up to this point, India has won 2 bronze medals, has 2 wrestlers going for gold and another going for bronze. They also had 2 wrestlers earn 10 points apiece by finishing in 5th. After India, Russia is still in the hunt with 3 medals earned and another 3 still alive for bronze. Take a look below to see the wrestlers remaining for the top three teams and the potential points they could score.

The number next to each wrestler is the potential amount of points they could still earn. Those with 5 next to their name are currently in a medal match and need to win only 1 match to earn 5 points. Those with 15 next to their name are in repechage and could earn 10 points with 1 win and another 5 by winning their medal match. As the above chart shows, a considerable amount of points are still on the board for the top 3 and the race could come down to the last match.
