LIVE From Russia: Day 4 Junior Worlds Updates

Follow along here for the latest happenings from the 2021 Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russia. Day 4 features the second five wrestlers in the women's freestyle competition, including Jaslynn Gallegos (53 kg), Claire DiCugno (57 kg), Korina Blades (62 kg), Alara Boyd (65 kg), Kennedy Blades (72 kg).

Emily Shilson (50 kg), Amit Elor (68 kg), and Kylie Welker (76 kg) are wrestling for gold medals. Payton Stroud (55 kg) is still alive in repechage while Mia Macaluso (59 kg) has been eliminated. 

The competition begins at 1 a.m. Central with prelims and quarterfinals. Semifinals begin at 6:45 a.m. and medal matches begin at 8 a.m.

Repechage (55 kg): Munkhgerel Munkhbat (MGL) over Payton Stroud, 10-0

Stroud gave up the first takedown but fought off a turn at the edge of the mat. She attempted a headlock when they returned to their feet but gave up another takedown in the process. Munkbat picked up her third takedown on a low-level shot and scored for the third time. She scored her fourth takedown moments later and picked up a turn for a 10-0 technical superiority win. Payton Stroud has been eliminated from the tournament. 

Round of 16 (65 kg): Irina Ringaci (MDA) over Alara Boyd, 9-2

Ringaci scored four points off a fireman’s carry then picked up a turn for an early 6-0 lead. She picked up a late first-period takedown for an 8-0 lead at the break. 

Boyd attempted a head to the inside single but Ringaci fought through the position and eventually escaped unscathed with her 8-0 lead intact. Ringaci shot a low single but Boyd counter with a turn for her first two points of the match. Ringaci scored a reversal and eventually won, 9-2.

Round of 16 (57 kg): Claire DiCugno vs. Mansi Mansi (IND)

Mansi struck first with a two-point takedown off a go behind then she laced up the legs for a pair of turns to lead 6-0. DiCugno took a bite into the lead with a late takedown but was still behind 6-2 entering the break. 

Mansi scored first on a step out then followed that up with a takedown near the edge of the mat for a 9-2 lead. Another step-out off a shot out of bounds extended the lead to 10-2.

DiCugno fired back with her second takedown of the match but still had ground to cover with a minute remaining and a 10-4 deficit. 

Mansi spun behind for another takedown and a 12-4 lead. Mansi finished the match with a four-point double, which resulted in a 16-4 technical superiority win.

DiCugno was eliminated from the tournament after Mansi lost in the next round.

Round of 16 (72 kg): Kennedy Blades vs. Mariam Guseinova (RUS)

Blades wasted no time getting on the board with a four-point double-leg. Another takedown and turn made it 8-0. Blades finished off the match with a 10-0 technical superiority in 1:11.

Round of 16 (62 kg): Korina Blades vs. Nadzeya Bulanaya (BLR)

Blades looked sharp early, scoring a trio of takedowns and fighting off a headlock attempt at the end of the period for a 6-0 lead at the break. 

Bulanaya scored first in the second period with a takedown but Blades got one back on a step-out for a 7-2 lead. Another step-out extended her lead to 8-2. Blades fought off a shot and a headlock attempt in the closing seconds for an 8-2 win. 

Quarterfinals (53 kg): Jaslynn Gallegos vs. Chamodya Keshani Maduravalagedon (SRI)

Gallegos got on the board first with an activity clock violation but was taken to her back off a shot as soon as the clock expired, which only resulted in two points for Maduravalage. Despite nearly getting pinned, Gallegos was only down 2-1 after the exchange. Gallegos hit a four-point throw off an underhook to take a 5-2 lead into the break.

Gallegos hit another four-point throw but gave up a reversal for a 9-3 lead. Gallegos came out on top with a four-point throw off a terrific scramble for a 13-3 technical superiority win. 

Quarterfinals (72 kg): Kennedy Blades over Nurzat Nurtaeva (KGZ)

Well, that didn’t take long. Blades got on the board immediately with a lightning-fast takedown followed by another takedown a few seconds later along with a turn. She led 6-0 in under a minute. Blades ended it with another takedown and another turn for a 10-0 technical superiority. 

Quarterfinals (62 kg): Korina Blades over Yagmur Cakmak (TUR), FALL

Cakmak scored forest with an exposure, Blades came out with a reversal, then Cakmak scored on another exposure for a 4-1 lead at the break.

Cakmak snagged another step-out for a 5-1 lead. Cakmak scored on a four-point throw out of bounds but the American corner challenged and lost, resulting in a 10-1 deficit.

Blades got the fall in a stunning turn of events by grabbing the chin and reaching across the far leg.

Semifinals (53 kg): Emma Jonna Denise Malmgren (SWE) over Jaslynn Gallegos, 12-1

Gallegos nearly countered out of a shot but was taken down for four shortly after the official was about to blow the action dead. Malmgrem scored two more on a takedown but was reversed by Gallegos for a 6-1 lead. 

Malmgren hit Gallegos with a carry for another four points to extend the lead to 10-1. Gallegos attempted an underarm spin at the end of the period then a lateral drop but was countered for two points. Malmgren won by technical superiority, 12-1 and moves into the finals. 

Semifinals (62 kg): Alina Kasabieva (RUS) over Korina Blades, 10-0

Kasabieva hit a single and brought it up high to eventually score the first takedown of the match early in the first period. Another single-leg takedown made the score 4-0. Kasabieva whizzered out of a shot by Blades to avoid getting taken down near the end of the period. She took a 4-0 lead into the break. 

Kasabieva scored on a sweep single in the second period to extend her lead to 6-0. She followed that up with a double to for her fourth takedown then ended the match with a cross body ankle pick for a 10-0 technical superiority. 

Semifinals (72 kg): Kennedy Blades over Saneh Saneh (IND), 11-0

Blades kept her tradition by scoring off the whistle — this time with a five-point bomb to start the match. She went back to the two-point variety on a double leg takedown for a 7-0 lead. 

The second period was more of the same. Blades scored off a single then picked up a turn for an 11-0 technical superiority and spot in the gold medal finals. 

Gold medal match (50 kg): Emily Shilson over Enkhzul Batbaatar (MGL), 10-0

Shilson struck first with a takedown off a go-behind for a 2-0 lead. Another go behind and three consecutive guts ended the match 10-0 and gave Shilson the 50-kg gold.

Gold medal match (68 kg): Amit Elor over Elizaveta Petliakova (RUS), 10-0

Elor worked from a front headlock to a go-behind for a takedown and three turns for an 8-0 lead. Two step-outs made it 10-0. Elor is your World champion with a technical superiority win in the finals. 

Gold medal match (76 kg): Kylie Welker over Bipasha Bipasha (IND), 10-0

Welker scored four points on a snatch single then countered a shot by Bipasha, which resulted in three turns and a 10-0 technical superiority.
