By winning an Olympic bronze, Thomas Gilman has earned the right to represent Team USA at 57kg at the World Championships. He announced via his Instagram that he will compete at worlds and has earned the #4 seed there. Should Uguev also compete in Norway, he will be the #1 seed and potentially meet Gilman in the World Semi-Finals.

Takahashi, along with all of Japan's Olympians, will not be competing at the 2021 World Championships. He will be replaced by Toshyiya Abe who was a junior world champion in 2019. Abe should be known by American fans for defeating Vito Arujau in the finals of those Junior World Championships.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya is the first medalist from the Olympics at 57kg who has declared he will not participate in the world championships. India will be hosted their trials on August 31st and Dahiya stated that would not give him enough time to prepare coming off the Olympics. Shubham Kaushik won those trials at 57kg and will represent India at worlds.

Alireza Sarlak won Iran's trials and will replace Reza Atri. Sarlak has had various bouts of success over the past few years and will be a medal threat in Oslo. Though he did not place, he was Iran's rep at U23 Worlds and Junior Worlds in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

Olympic champion, Takuto Otoguro will not be defending his title at the World Championships. In fact all of Japan's Olympic team is sitting out in October. Kaiki Yamaguchi will replace Otoguro at 65kg in Norway. Yamaguchi was Japan's world team rep at 61kg but did not place at those world championships. Yamaguchi was, however, a junior world gold medalist at 2019 Junior Worlds.

Bajrang Punia will not participate in the world championships this year due to a knee injury he suffered a month before the Olympics. Punia will take the time off to rehab his knee and prepare for the 2022 season. Rohit will be Bajrang's replacement. He India's world team trials and was India's 65kg rep this year at Junior Worlds and did not place there.

Amir Yazdani will take Ghiasi's place at 65kg for Iran. Yazdani originally qualified the weight for Iran for the Olympics but then lost the wrestle-off to Ghiasi. Yazdani was a cadet world silver back in 2015 but has been vying for the world team spot at 65 ever since 2019. While he isn't a gold medal threat, he is capable of putting a few wins together and making a run int this 65kg field.

Kyle Dake has declared his intent to wrestle in the 2021 World Championships and will once again man the spot at 74kg for Team USA. Dake's potential match with Zaurbek Sidakov was the most highly anticipated bout of the Olympic Games and unfortunately never materialized. Sidakov has yet to release his plans for the October World Championships.

Replacing Kazakhstan's Daniyar Kaisanov is Nurkhoza Kaipanov. Kaipanov was in contention to make the Olympic team up until about 2 months before the Games when he failed to place at the Poland Open. Kaipanov won world silver in 2019 at 70kg and was the Asian Champion at 74kg in 2021 so he is not much of a downgrade from Olympian Kaisanov.

David Taylor will be looking to add a second world title in October to his Olympic gold. He will be wrestling in Oslo and should be the favorite. Reports out of Iran have indicated Hassan Yazdani will be wrestling at the World Championships. Taylor and Yazdani will be seeded #1 and #2 respectively and could meet again in the finals for a rematch of their epic Olympic Gold medal bout.

Deepak Punia (IND), who lost in the bronze medal match to Myles Amine, will not be competing in Oslo. He reportedly had a knee injury and is using this time to recover and get back to full strength for the start of the 2022 season. Sandeep Mann will take Punia's place and prior to these trials was attempting to make the Olympics at 74kg. Mann has no major accolades at the world level aside from being India's 79kg rep at 2019 Junior Worlds where he failed to place.

Kyle Snyder will be wrestling in Oslo, Norway and seeking to reclaim the 97kg title. The big question is whether or not the current #1 pound-for-pound wrestler Abdulrashid Sadulaev will be in Oslo to defend his crown. In the mix zone after Sadulaev won Olympic gold, our own Andy Hamilton reported Sadulaev said he did plan on wrestling at worlds. However since that interview, Sadulaev has gone back on that statement and said he is unsure of his participation at the world championships.

After winning Olympic Gold in dramatic fashion, all eyes continue to be on Gable Steveson. It looks as though Steveson could sit atop the heavyweight throne for as long as he desires but he's also been vocal on pursuing other options in the WWE or MMA. He has not released his plans yet, but Steveson has until August 15th to make his decision on whether or not he will compete at the 2021 World Championships.

Iran's Olympic bronze medalist, Amir Zare, will be in competition at the world championships and should be considered a gold medal threat in the heavyweight field. Zare was leading Geno Petriashvili in their Olympic semi-final match 3-0 before Petriashvili came back to win 6-3.

Sarah Hildebrandt is the only medalist from the Olympics who has confirmed her competition in Oslo at the World Championships. Yanan Sun, who defeated Hildebrandt in the Olympic semis, could also be at worlds but China has yet to submit their rosters. If she attends, Sun would be considered the greatest threat to knock off Hildebrandt on her quest to gold. After Sun, Japan's Remina Yoshimoto should also be considered at gold contender. Along with Japan's reputation, Yoshimoto was a 2017 cadet world champion and has won the last 2 Japanese national tournaments. Yoshimoto was kept off of the senior team due to being behind world and Olympic champion Yui Susaki.

Amy Fearnside will replace Jacarra Winchester as the rep for the United States at 53kg. This will be Fearnside's first senior world team but she does have years of experience on the international level. Fearnside placed 5th at U23 Worlds in 2017 and wrestled at Junior Worlds in 2014.

Olympic bronze medalist, Bolortuya Bat Ochir (MGL) is the only confirmed medalist who will also participate at worlds. Though Bat Ochir might be the most credentialed, Japan's Akari Fujinama might be the favorite in Oslo. Fujinami was a cadet world champion in 2018 and is only 17 years old. She made the world team this year by defeating Senior world silver medalist Nanami Irie and also has a win over 2018 world champion Haruna Okuno.

Maroulis' main competition will be Bulgaria's Evelina Nikolova and Japan's Sae Nanjo. Nikolova also won bronze at the Olympics and won bronze at the 2015 World Championships. With Olympic Champion Risako Kawai sitting out, Sae Nanjo is getting her first chance to wrestle at the senior world championships. Nanjo has been successful at the age-level world championships winning both Junior (2017 and 2019) and U23 World (2019) Titles.

Miracle should be considered a medal threat in Oslo but will be challenged by Aisuluu Tynybekova and Nonoka Ozaki. Tynybekova was the Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo and was the 2019 62kg world champion. While Ozaki is only 18 years old, she is a two time cadet world champion (2018 and 2019) and has won the Japanese National tournament in 2020 and 2021.

After wining the Olympics, Tamyra Mensah-Stock will be wrestling at the World Championships and will be the prohibitive favorite in Oslo. Unlike most other weights in Oslo, 3 of the four Olympic medalists at 68kg will also be in the bracket at worlds. Nigeria's Blessing Oborududu should be considered the main threat to Mensah-Stock's title. Oborududu only lost to Mensah-Stock 4-1 in the Olympic finals and has presented a challenging match for Mensah-Stock in their four matches (Mensah-Stock is 4-0 against Oborududu).

With Olympic gold medalist Aline Rotter Focken sitting out of the world championships, Adeline Gray will be the favorite to win world gold in Oslo. Gray is also looking to make history by winning her 6th world title. Gray's main challenger should be Aiperi Medet Kyzy (KGZ). The two met in the semi-finals at the Olympics where Gray narrowly won a 3-2 decision.
