The Race Gets Tighter - USA Women Holding In First

After 2 and a half days of competition in Tokyo, the USA Women are out performing every country in the field. Although the Olympics doesn’t officially give a “team trophy”, we’ll be tracking the team competition and crown the team champs at the end of the Games. There are still three weights remaining, but take a look below to see how the women’s team race looks up to this point.

Tamyra Wins Gold - USA Holds First Place

Tamyra Mensah-Stock became just the second ever Olympic gold medalist in women’s wrestling for Team USA. She controlled every match and outscored her opponents 34-5 with two tech-falls and two decisions. With her gold medal performance, she earned 25 total team points for USA. Couple those points with Adeline Gray’s silver performance and Team USA is tied with Kyrgyzstan in first place with 45 total points.

Japan “Struggling”

Going into the Olympics, Japan was the clear favorite with gold medal contenders at almost every weight. However they failed to medal in the first two weights, 68kg and 76kg, by losing in the bronze medal match of both bouts. In spite of those “failures” Japan is still capable of catching and surpassing both the USA and Kyrgyzstan. Yukako Kawai made the finals for Japan at 62kg earning 20 points for Japan. Along with Kawai, Japan has gold medal threats at the remaining three weights yet to be contended.

In order to keep pace with Japan, team USA will need points from their remaining three wrestlers - Helen Maroulis (57kg), Jacarra Winchester (53kg) and Sarah Hildebrandt (50kg). All three are capable, but with Japan’s heavy hitters, there is no margin for error. USA’s women have never won a team title and are looking to make history in Tokyo. We’ll continue to keep you informed on every update in the team standings.
